It's a shame that both scheduled showings of (500) Days of Summer were tonight, because unless this film ends up slotted for Festival Favorites, you might not get a chance to see it for a while. But whenever it hits theaters, whether it's a festival encore or wide release, go see it. Billed as an anti-romantic comedy, this film is enormously appealing if, like me, you think relationships are more trouble than they're worth and love is an illusion. That said, even hopeless romantics will be charmed by this engaging story.
Jillian Iva's favorite sideshow act is the blockhead—you know, the guy that hammers nails into his nose. Coincidentally, that's the one circus skill that I have. We're on the subject of sideshows because rumor has it that Jillian's grandmother—who is also the namesake for her band, Von Iva—was a snake charmer. It must run in the family, because Jillian is something of a charmer herself. She giggles as she tells me the story, her voice barely hinting at the powerful vocal chops and deep, sexy growl that mesmerize on the band's latest EP, Girls on Film.
If Jim Carrey would stop being a caricature of himself then maybe it would be a little easier to enjoy his films. He shines in his non-comedic stuff (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Truman Show), but his comic performances are so over the top and deliberate that sometimes the overacting is difficult to get past. Though even if he were able to take it down a notch, this movie still would have some problems.
Even though the reviews aren't entirely positive, whether you're planning on going to the movie or not, you've gotta admit this is a pretty good trailer. Plus, footage of Rittenhouse Square!
