Alright, there's no Phillies game tonight, so tonight is a good opportunity to un-glue yourself from the television and see what's going on in Philly before tomorrow's Game 5.
Happy Friday, Philadelphia! Still not sure how you want to get your weekend started? Here are our ideas:
Matt Duke (MySpace) is easily one of Phillyist's favorite things about, well, Philly. Because he plays frequently at World Cafe Live—probably our favorite place to catch live music in the city—we've seen him, and talked about him, many times. But it wasn't until his most recent show at WCL that we actually got a chance to talk Duke. So read on, and if you didn't get to see Duke when he played with Tony Lucca and Jay Nash a couple weeks ago, fear not; Matt will be opening for also-ridiculously-talented Charlotte Martin at WCL on Wednesday night. So check out our conversation with Matt, and get details on Wednesday's show below the interview.
Canadian musicians The Weakerthans are one of the few bands (actually, the only one we have found so far) that can tug so effectively at your heartstrings while singing from the perspective of a cat.
What's that you say? Phillyist really digs Rhett Miller (MySpace), frontman of the Old 97's? No! Why would you say that?
Let's face it: Phillyist is never going to stop encouraging you to check out Matt Duke (MySpace). He's one of our favorite performers, and a local, so we're just going to keep plugging his shows until the world—or at least the entire City of Brotherly Love—takes notice. Philadelphia gets its next opportunity to embrace Duke on Sunday night, when he'll be playing an acoustic set at World Cafe Live in support of his recent release, the songs on the acoustic EP take on a totally new life with Duke's stripped-down reinterpretations. Especially poignant are the acoustic versions of "The Father, the Son, and the Harlot's Ghost" and "Walk It Off," which are both notably different than their full-band incarnations.
If the Bangles have often been the soundtrack for lovers' endless summer nights, with gently melancholic songs like "You Don't Love Me" and "Thought I Knew You", Matthew Sweet has scored the backdrop of many a breakup.
Anyone who clicked here thinking they were getting info on some reunion of Jim Carrey, David Alan Grier and the Wayans Brothers (the older and funny ones, not the younger and stupid ones), click away now. We're here to talk about rock. Furious, hard, guitar-shredding rock.
Tonight looks like a pretty quiet night around the City of Brotherly Love. Such as it is, here are Phillyist's quick-picks for you evening agenda.

There's something awesome about a catchy, poppy song that can't get out of your head. Unfortunately, most of the people who make these songs turn out to be one-hit wonders (anybody remember Matthew Wilder?)—but we've got a good feeling about the two bands playing the World Café Live this Friday. One of them, Peter Bjorn and John proved their awesome singability with "Young Folks," a song so good that you knew you'd never hear from the band again—until the announcement that the band was releasing a new album, Living Thing, which, on first listen, sounds just as awesome as their last. (That'd be Writer's Block—the album "Young Folks" lived on.)
Spring is coming and let's face it—we could all use a little cardio to get back in shape. What better way to get that cardio than dancing at World Cafe Live to the infectious sounds of Toubab Krewe? Answer: there is no better way. At least not one that involves such great music. Tonight, Toubab Krewe will be bringing their world music flavor to Philadelphia in what is sure to be a groovy, uplifting and just plain fun evening.
So this is the second week in a row where we have a "you gotta friggin' see this show at World Cafe this weekend if you know what's good for you" post. Hopefully this doesn't bore you too much, but this shows that the folks just on the west side of the Schuylkill are pumping out lots of good tunes. And you must seize some on Saturday night. Like for serious.
