Phillyist Playlist: Bloodshot Beer-B-Q

If you're in town this weekend, there's probably no better way to end your summer than the Bloodshot Beer-B-Q. Bloodshot Records—famous for giving performers like Neko Case and Old 97's their starts—is celebrating its 15th "birthday" with an afternoon of bands, beef (free food to the first 150 concertgoers to arrive), and beer at World Cafe. Expect blazing sets from Robbie Fulks (MySpace), Bottle Rockets (MySpace), Waco Brothers (MySpace), and more...and maybe a little bit of whiskey and sinnin', too.

We're totally bummed that we missed Ingrid Michaelson at the World Cafe Live last week, especially after seeing this video.

'Twas the Sunday after Valentine's Day and all through the World Cafe Live, folks were stirring about, probably even mice.

Tomorrow night, One Republic is playing The Trocadero. We've never heard of them, and outside of the song that automatically pops up on their MySpace page, we have no idea what their music sounds like.

I am thoroughly convinced that for his solo shows, when there's no percussion onstage, Rhett Miller uses his hair to help him keep time. It seems to have a mind of its own, swirling around his head and over his eyes as he energetically plays the songs that his fans know every word to. His isn't '80s headbanger hair: it starts out perfectly feathered and carefully blown-dry, but as Miller performs, it becomes drenched in sweat, spraying the members of the audience who dare to stand in the front row. Miller may be playing a solo show, but there are two very visible personalities on that stage. (At one point halfway through his set, he mentioned that his hair was getting in his eyes and he needed to get it cut. Not too short, I hope – what would he use as a metronome then?)

What's not to love about Old 97's frontman Rhett Miller? He's attractive. He's talented. He's wired. He's charismatic. He's a Texan. (Hush, you – the president is not representative of the entire state.) AND, he's going to be back in our fair city on Saturday night.

This was the one show of the year I went to strictly on a friend's recommendation, having never heard of the band. It was worth it. Bradford Cox's creepy demeanor only adds to the show. The droning guitars and heavy drums created a melancholy, fugue-like state that I'd gladly return to next time Deerhunter is in town. There's nothing like going to a concert and leaving feeling like you've just been mindfucked.

Many, many moons ago, this Phillyist spent her college years carousing through the mean streets of Pittsburgh. As anyone knows, a good carousing needs a soundtrack, and in Pittsburgh, the soundtrack was invariably the music of The Clarks.

Raise your hand if you don't love YouTube/Viddler/Google Video/etc. Okay, that one guy raising your hand? You probably just want to scroll past this post, because it probably won't interest you in the slightest. To the rest of you, here are the fifteen videos we've posted in 2007 that I'm still entirely too proud of myself for finding. (The video embedded here didn't make it to the list, but deserves honorable mention if only because it's a locally-produced response to one of the best SNL musical numbers in a decade.)

This Sunday, a music legend comes to the World Cafe Live. And he's not just coming to play. Bob Mould (MySpace) will take part in a special Q&A session before performing an intimate acoustic set. Then he'll step aside for a screening of his first concert DVD, Circle of Friends. If that doesn't sound cool, there's something wrong with you. Bob Mould is, of course, the mastermind behind punk/college rock band Hüsker Dü and...
