Twitterist: Philadelphia In 140 Characters Or Less

Today's featured Twitter user is, well, us! Okay, it's not really us. Instead, it's all of the people who have included us in their Twitter lists. Right now, we're listed over 70 times, and we wanted use this space today to say thanks for all the listings. We're hoping to get around to making a few of our own sometime soon, so don't be surprised if you notice that we're returning the list-love.

Howsabout Something Cool?

We all know about First Friday, what with the galleries and the box wine, and then the drink specials and then the Sugar Moms to escape the gathering storm from New Jersey. Now there is something new to check out—Second Saturday.

This is going to sound a little stupid, but there was a hell of a lot more running involved in the Great Urban Race than I originally thought there would be. Having done one urban adventure race prior to the GUR, I definitely had certain expectations. Those expecations included puzzle clues, crazy stunts, and of course, covering a pretty decent amount of ground in and around Philadelphia. They did not necessarily include essentially sprinting from Market Street to the Art Museum, booking it all the way down Fairmount to the subway, short break on the subway before running from City Hall to Reading Terminal Market, up and over to 8th and Race, back down to 3rd and Market, then all the way back up 3rd Street to Buckhead Saloon to the finish line.

Asshole of the Week

Asshole of the Week

This week, I am sick of death—of good men dying of cancer, of the dimming of the stars. I don't care that I didn't personally know any of these people. I watched Charlie's Angels when I was home sick from school, and I tried over and over again to learn the Moonwalk without ever succeeding. I am deflated by these deaths.

Over at 52nd and Pine Streets lies Malcolm X Park. Malcolm X Park is yet another example of the community working together to create something they can share and enjoy. The park has an active "friends of" organization. The Friends group meets on the first Wednesday of the month, in the park during nice weather, and at a neighbor's home during the colder/rainier months. Annual dues are $5 for an individual or $10 for a household. Malcolm X Park also has a well-maintained blog, which details upcoming park events as well as the everyday problems occurring in the park such as short dumping and graffiti.

Asshole of the Week

Though robbery hasn't been charming for a while (it has been a long time since "The Highwayman"), these two unknown gents seem determined to make it as awkwardly lame as possible. The police are currently searching for two young men on BMX bikes wielding Uzis who began a crime spree on Tuesday. BMX bikes and Uzis? Really? Is that necessary?

Parking

When I wrote about Clark Park a few weeks ago, I offhandedly stated that in West Philly, the parks are bigger. I wrote that before having visited Cedar Park, a small community park situated on a triangle of land between Baltimore Avenue, Catharine Street, and 49th and 50th Streets. Cedar Park is on the tiny side, but that's okay. On the sunny Saturday I stopped by, children were playing on the playground, older men were arguing with each other about something in that way that makes it clear they're not mad, and other people lounged about, keeping on an eye on the kids. Vendors were set up along the Baltimore Avenue side of the park, selling jewelry and various sundry things. It is rumored that the Carrot Cake Man is there selling his cakes in the evenings.

City Paper Round Up

An in depth look at Olney, the forgotten stepchild of Philly neighborhoods.

Proofreading Philly tries to capture typos, wordos, and all other kinds of grammatical mistakes that we see around the city. But we need your help! Email photos to us from your computer or your phone, and show the city that you care about good grammar.

Time for the Choice Awards for 2008. Check out the best A&E, news bits, shopping & style, sports & rec, and food & drink our city has to offer. (Though it sounds like the dessert section may be a little biased, but hey, who doesn’t like a free cupcake.)

I'm angry enough having been towed from Baltimore Avenue for the Chaka Khan show this weekend, but at least unlike this guy, I was towed to support a bonafide diva.

A week's worth of local Craigslist hijinks.

For those of you on the left side of the Schuylkill, it’s time to give a warm sun salutation to your new neighbors on 45th and Baltimore: Studio 34 founders and longtime West Philly residents Angela Norris, James Peniston, and Stephen Fisher.

Let it be said, first, that I am glad this little drama exists and look forward to seeing more.

Sarah in West Philly

  • The Inquirer has a very interesting article about the "gentrification frontier" in West Philly, which is apparently smack dab at 50th and Baltimore.
  • Only a few miles away and only a few hours after the incident described above, an 18-month-old boy was struck in the elbow and the foot by stray bullets during an altercation at Tustin Playground at 60th Street and Lancaster Avenue. The toddler is in stable condition. The intended target of the shooting was also struck and is in critical condition. Meanwhile, two other babies were found dead in the Philadelphia area yesterday - one at a day care center in Wilmington, and the other in a trash bin in Lancaster.

  • There aren't many details available, but a schoolbus accident occurred before 8AM yesterday morning at 28th Street and Passyunk Avenue, injuring nine of the passengers, six of them children. All passengers were taken to area hospitals - the uninjured for evaluation and the injured for treatment.
