Put down the Pabst, folks, Philly Beer Week has officially begun. Beer enthusiasts and general tipplers alike can treat their palates to city-wide specials on Philly's numerous local craft brews and imports.

Don’t know about you, but when we think about driving in the city we start to get slight palpitations. Part of it could be that we’re used to walking and Septa; the thought of paying exorbitant amounts to park in UCity on a Friday night convinces us that the El isn’t so bad after all. Plus, there’s storage: when we were living on the outskirts of Center City a parking spot would have cost 2/3 of our rent. Don’t get us started on the exhaust fumes, particularly those from the ancient chariots some of us have to drive around in because after parking costs we can’t afford an upgrade. But there are times when having a car is a necessity, even in the city. You need one to escape the heat and exhaust for the cool ocean breeze in the summer for instance, or to do an IKEA run. And so a balance must be struck.

The Sixers are still motoring along, posting a win over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night (101-89), and fueling… playoff fever? We’ve felt this before, haven’t we Philly? Breathe through it. It’s not worth the morning after remorse. They’re not home again until March 7; hopefully they’ll keep up the winning away against Golden State (tonight 10:30PM), Phoenix (tomorrow 9PM), and the LA Clippers (Monday at 10:30PM); you can catch all on SportsNet.

The Sixers spanked the Knicks (124-84) on Wednesday night at the Wach. Tonight they will be in Orlando, then they’ll turn around and host the Magic on Wednesday at 7PM (get tickets or watch here). Here’s hoping that’ll be two for two. Tomorrow they’ll match up with the Miami Heat, against whom they are 2-0 this season.

What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.

Maybe you're all indie'd out and you're tired of the minimalist, navel gazing shite that got you through this bi-polar winter. Maybe you're tired of smacking yourself in the head, realizing that you could've seen a kick-ass band in the cozy comfort of Johnny Brenda's rather than the hips-to-asses crappy acoustics Electric Factory a year from now. Or maybe, it's Wednesday night and you want to tie one on and rock the hell out like it's Friday.

I’m filling in for Ross this week with Asshole of the Week, and the honorable fossilized simpleton from Pennsylvania, Arlen Specter, is my selection for this prestigious award. This camera-ready attention whore, who is so desperate for air time that he calls up 610-WIP every Monday morning and eagerly reveals how little he knows about Philadelphia sports while the majority of the hosts' mics are turned off in order to stifle their stupefied laughter, spent this past Wednesday meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell getting down and dirty about why Goodell destroyed the illegal tapes seized from noted cheater and sore loser, New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick. The meeting came on the heels of the delusional Specter stating that the destruction of these tapes was reminiscent of the CIA’s destruction of tapes depicting torturous Al Qaeda suspect interrogations. The guy who invented the Single Bullet theory out of the recesses of his furtive imagination now sees it as his job to question other people's reasoning abilities, raving about how all the Commissioner had to do was lock up the tapes to keep them from being distributed, which Goodell states is his main reason for banishing the videos to the trash compacter (make no mistake about it, Goodell’s excuse is probably bullshit, but who cares?). Utilizing the folksy, common-man charm that has allowed the Pennsylvania senior senator to be reelected five times, Specter waxed poetic about the American citizens’ right to “honest football games.”

NEXUS/foundation for today's art is a champion of local artists of all stripes; their commitment to maintain gallery space dedicated to local emerging and experimental artists has rightfully earned them a rep as a Philly art institution. The fruits of their mission will be on display tonight, as they present their new members exhibitions with an opening reception.

The Sixers are still going (for now) as they seek to match their season-high four game winning streak (they’ve won at home against Washington 101-96, Miami 101-84, and the LA Clippers 101-80) with a win over the Dallas Mavericks tonight at 7PM at the Wach (get tickets or watch here). They will host the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday at 7PM at the Wach (get tickets or watch here). If you’re going to that game, get there early: they’re honoring Marc Iavaroni (member of the ’83 Championship Team) by giving away a Mr. Potato Head to the first 5,000 fans.

Last Friday & the weekend: Michael defended his decision to cut $21 million in funding to Philadelphia Safe and Sound, the program that, as we mentioned last week, John Street had shifted money to in the waning days of his administration. And he announced that the Department of Public Welfare would be auditing Safe and Sound's finances for the last couple years. Michael also ignited Governor Rendell's fury with his revocation of SugarHouse's casino license, as Rendell is all for the casinos.

Normally we could start this post with some quip about chasing off the winter doldrums with some laughter. But seeing as how the mercury is riding high today, and should be for a while, we got nothing. That’s why we’re not comedians. Luckily, there are some very talented folks who are, and they are presenting a 5-day smorgasbord of improv and sketch comedy goodness for your gluttonous consumption.

The Sixers lost to the Orlando Magic Saturday in an excruciatingly close game (108-106). They will try to regroup tomorrow night against the Washington Wizards at 7PM at the Wach (get tickets or watch here), and the Miami Heat on Thursday at 7PM at the Wach (get tickets or watch here).

Last Friday & the weekend: Michael's search for a new CEO of the Philadelphia School District got down to two contenders—apparently—after Temple College of Education dean Kent McGuire withdrew his name from consideration for the position.

The Sixers are trying to keep up the home court magic after trashing the Milwaukee Bucks Wednesday (112-69), by beating the Orlando Magic tonight at 7PM at the Wach (get tickets or watch here).

The Drexel hoopsters had a rough week. The men (9-12, 2-7) dropped an overtime game at home to William & Mary last Wednesday, then got whooped by VCU on the road. The women (10-8, 5-2) saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end with an overtime loss of their own, against Towson. Then they couldn't seal the deal against William & Mary, and ended up giving up a late lead to lose their second straight. The women will have a good chance to bounce back this week, though, going on the road to the CAA cellar-dwellers: Northeastern tomorrow night, then Hofstra Sunday afternoon. Maybe the men will get a couple win as well, as they're playing a couple teams as bad as they are: at Georgia State tonight, then hosting Northeastern late Saturday afternoon. We are torn. We are not usually torn. Usually, when something makes us rather uncomfortable, we use our prerogative as a (unpaid) blogger to ignore it. We have taken great license with our Phillyist byline, in that we write about what we like and think is important; we don’t pick up on the stuff that is out of our league or seems boring to us. Hence you’ll find a lot of arty stuff, charity stuff, and even some sports stuff under the below name. However, today, we are torn.

After losing to the Knicks (81-89) on Friday and beating the Charlotte Bobcats away Saturday night (103-96), the Sixers hope to score big at home: seven of their next eight games are at the Wachovia Center. Catch them Wednesday battling the Milwaukee Bucks at 7PM (get tickets or watch).

Last Friday & the weekend: Michael probably doesn't know it, but he got a shout-out from Hot Hot Heat frontman Michael Bays at last week's FREEZEtival before the band played "Bandages." What the connection between the song and our mayor is, we have no idea. And in real news, Michael named his appointees to the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority board.

After losing to the Pacers Monday (110-103), and the Pistons Wednesday (86-78), the Sixers are hoping to beat the Knicks tonight. They’re hoping that snaps them out of the losing funk they’ve been in, which has seen them lose 10 of their last 12 games.

The Sixers lost on the road to the Celtics on Friday, but finally beat the Toronto Raptors, the first time this season, 99-95 Saturday. They’re playing the Pacers today at 2PM (watch or get tickets) and the Pistons on Wednesday night at 7PM (watch or get tickets) at the Wachovia Center.

Last Friday & the Weekend: Michael must have had a low-key weekend, as the Nutter newswires were fairly quiet. He probably needed the rest, though, as he had a pretty hectic week last week, and it may only now be sinking in that he's the mayor.
