Okay, so the low temperatures this week might still be a little wintry, but, during the day at least, the sun will be shining and we can finally put away our scarves and gloves.
Once upon a time, there was a little girl from Wynnewood named Alex Scott. At one, she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. At four, even while she was being treated for the cancer herself, she started a lemonade stand to raise money for the pediatric cancer center where she was being treated. The little lady attracted a lot of attention across the country and beyond, but unfortunately, all the money in the world couldn't cure Alex's cancer, and she passed away in 2004, at the age of eight.
Remember how excited we were when Rita's re-opened for the spring? Well, take that excitement and multiply it by ten, because today, being the first day of Spring, is also Free Water Ice Day at all Rita's locations! That's right—just show up at Rita's and choose a flavor: they'll hand you a free regular just because of what day of the year it is. How sweet is that?
This Phillyist lives a block and a half from the downtown Rita's (you know, the one that actually has indoor seating), and even though we don't go there very often, it saddened us to see them close up shop for the winter, complete with window sign reading "We'll miss you!" We would walk by every day, thinking of just how sad and lonely it looked in there. But yesterday, we were happy to see that the sign had been taken down, and a new one was in its place, telling all passers-by that Rita's would re-open Thursday (as in, tomorrow). We assume that the rest of the Rita's locations in the area will be opening tomorrow as well.
When I lived in Pittsburgh, I was constantly mocked for not only my Philly accent, but for my use of the term "Water Ice." ("What else is ice made from, if not water?" they would ask.) Luckily there's you, my fellow Philadelphians, who are willing to mock me for other things, but who, at the very least, know what Water Ice is. And today, you can get this sweet, chilly treat for free at participating Rita's Water Ice locations.
While we try to get over the fact that the South St. bridge is so crappy it was damaged by rain, here's your roundup of what's going on in the Philly blogosphere:
