It be International Talk Like a Pirate Day, and there be many ways to celebrate. The Franklin Real Pirates exhibit is a natural choice, though on the pricier side; as an added bonus, however, "Cap'n Slappy" and "Ol' Chumbucket," founders of the holiday in question, will be on hand, and there will be a screening of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl at 8PM.

  • Police are still searching for the rapist or rapists who have been terrorizing the Frankford section of Philadelphia. A man was arrested Saturday in a kidnapping and sex assault, but police don't believe he's connected to the other incidents.
  • Despite a threat from Senator Fumo that their tax breaks would be removed if they didn't relocate from the waterfront, the Philadelphia casinos are determined to stay. And in fact the legislature has no legal grounds to force them out. The question now is whether anyone will even follow through on Fumo's threat, as he'll be gone by this fall.
  • It should never be 74 degrees when you leave for work in the morning. Ever.

The Attorney General's Office has accused Former State Rep. Frank LaGrotta of giving his relatives fake jobs in order to pay them thousands in taxpayer dollars. A cheval-de-frise (an iron-tipped log that's placed in a riverbed along with many others in order to gore the hulls of enemy warships) was recently found at the bottom of the Delaware River at the Sunoco Logistics pier in South Philadelphia. It's a relic from the mid-1770s, and...

The big news this morning in both the Daily News and the Inquirer is that two more Philadelphia police officers were shot last night "as they attempted to serve a warrant in a narcotics investigation in the city's Frankford section." This morning, a 16-year-old male has been arrested in connection with the shooting. The Inquirer has a bit of a preview of the major policy report PennPraxis will be unveiling tonight about the development...

Every Tuesday and Thursday, we'll be posting events that are going on sale during the current week. This Tuesday post only collects the early announcements, so definitely check back on Thursday for the latest ticket news.

  • On November 14th, Penn Praxis will unveil its vision for the Delaware River waterfront, which is based on discussions with residents and representatives of commercial and government interests. But details about the plan have already come out, and although it has many supporters, it also has a small but vocal band of critics in the development community.
  • We love when we get the opportunity to see a ton of bands in one shot. We love it even more when a couple of the bands are old favorites of ours and others are bands we've never heard of, because it gives us the chance to check out some new music, and if we don't like what we hear, we can always go back to the stuff we know and be completely satisfied. That's why we're pumped up for tomorrow's Vans Warped Tour at the Tweeter Center.

  • More news about toxic gas leaks! The Oxford Valley Mall in Langhorne was closed early yesterday morning when employees of the J.C. Penney's started showing symptoms of exposure to carbon monoxide. Eight people were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated and released. Testing revealed that there was indeed quite a lot of carbon monoxide floating around in Penney's, caused by the collapse of a chimney on the roof. That store will remain closed until at least today, although the rest of the mall reopened early yesterday afternoon.
  • Sometimes kids can be so frustrating that parents might want to throw them to the sharks. Well, on July 29th and 30th they'll get the chance to do just that. In celebration of Shark Week, the Adventure Aquarium is hosting a unique event at its Delaware Waterfront location.

Happy Father's Day! For those of you who have dads, are dads, or know dads, this one's for you, from all of us at the Gothamist network.

Even though we kinda just bitched you out for not going to smaller venues and supporting smaller artists, we would love it if you joined us tonight over the bridge at Camden's large outdoor venue, The Tweeter Center. Yes, we're sure there will be a lot of emo and punk kids there but for whatever it's worth, it's going to be an experience and hopefully a fun one. The 2007 Honda Civic Tour features five...

Tomorrow afternoon from 3pm to 6pm there's going to be an unveiling of sorts down at the Independence Seaport Museum on Penn's Landing. This is no ordinary unveiling, though. It will be the first public presenation of the Central Delaware Waterfront Planning Process' (whew, we could barely say that out loud) ideas for revamping the riverfront.

  • The mayoral debates should be interesting when they finally happen, because right now the candidates can't even agree on when to have the debates, or how many to have, or what format they should be in. There's even a kind of debate cold war going on. Nutter's spokeswoman said of Fattah's recent debate proposal: "If he wants four, we want eight." That's so petty and ridiculous that it's awesome. Meanwhile, the Inquirer discusses endorsements and how important they really are for the candidates.
    • First off, let us say that although this particular item isn't about Philly, nor does it take place in Philly, or are far as we know involve Philly in any way, we're including it because it's big news, even if we mentioned it in yesterday's Whiz, too: NASA has set a time line for the realization of a manned Moon Base. Naturally, we have begun making plans to replicate their plans on the dark side of the moon for our evil Phillyist moon lair (so what if there's no source for solar energy on the dark side of the moon? We'd syphon it from NASA. D'uh. We did say it'd be an evil moon lair.) And now a little closer to our current, non-lunar home...
    • Bobby Clarke returns to the Flyers' family - this time as senior VP.
    • If you're craving Mexican, you may want to think twice before running "to the border;" some local Taco Bells have been linked to recent cases of E. Coli. Who knew they replaced that chihuahua with Montezuma?

The weeks starts out right when a sucker punch on the field lands Chicagoist in the middle of a Sox/Cubs throwdown and the fists continue to fly in the comments. Despite suburban resident Ms. Pinney's best little try no books will be banned anytime soon and the El is really really gross.

As you may or may not know, this past weekend (3/19-3/21) was Camden Waterfront Attraction Blogging Days, wherein 200 or so local bloggers, having applied and been accepted, were invited to visit, for free, each of the three big Camden Waterfront attractions (the Battleship NJ, Campbell's Field, and the Adventure Aquarium) and blog their fair and unbiased impressions. Phillyist was one of those bloggers, so here's part three of a three-part series covering our weekend adventures.

  • Speaking of money and politics, have you heard the most recent squabble amongst the city's prospective mayoral candidates? Many are apparently waiting to officially declare their candidacy in order to avoid campaign contribution limits put in place by a recent law. This questionable behavior has now led to a couple of lawsuits, as well as plenty of the usual aggressive self-righteous grand-standing from Union leader John Dougherty, who himself says, "personally, I'm a candidate for mayor," but "has family obligations to work out before he declares officially." Yeah, okay John.
