A look at how locals are faring in the Olympics. Police are still searching for the rapist or rapists who have been terrorizing the Frankford section of Philadelphia. A man was arrested Saturday in a kidnapping and sex assault, but police don't believe he's connected to the other incidents. The Inquirer takes a look at the crowded and sometimes dangerous conditions on the Kelly Drive bike path at Boathouse Row. The Daily News lists......

Recently a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit upheld Mumia Abu-Jamal's conviction in the killing of Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner, but said a new jury should decide whether he deserved life in prison or the death sentence for the crime. But Abu-Jamal is asking the federal appeals court to reconsider, and is still seeking a new trial. Despite a threat from Senator Fumo that their tax breaks......

It should never be 74 degrees when you leave for work in the morning. Ever. PHILADELPHIA'S LARGEST SINGLES KICKOFF TO SUMMER PARTY We can neither confirm nor deny that Meet Market Adventures is a good idea. We're not here to advertise or criticize. However, we do appreciate the efforts of any group that tries to lube up the lonelier locals with some booze, food, music, and prizes. It's hot as hell, so we hope you......

The Attorney General's Office has accused Former State Rep. Frank LaGrotta of giving his relatives fake jobs in order to pay them thousands in taxpayer dollars. A cheval-de-frise (an iron-tipped log that's placed in a riverbed along with many others in order to gore the hulls of enemy warships) was recently found at the bottom of the Delaware River at the Sunoco Logistics pier in South Philadelphia. It's a relic from the mid-1770s, and......

The big news this morning in both the Daily News and the Inquirer is that two more Philadelphia police officers were shot last night "as they attempted to serve a warrant in a narcotics investigation in the city's Frankford section." This morning, a 16-year-old male has been arrested in connection with the shooting. The Inquirer has a bit of a preview of the major policy report PennPraxis will be unveiling tonight about the development......

Prominent Philadelphia trial lawyer Dennis Cogan may defend state Senator Fumo, if he can get the case delayed for several months so he can study up on all its complexities. On November 14th, Penn Praxis will unveil its vision for the Delaware River waterfront, which is based on discussions with residents and representatives of commercial and government interests. But details about the plan have already come out, and although it has many supporters, it......

We love when we get the opportunity to see a ton of bands in one shot. We love it even more when a couple of the bands are old favorites of ours and others are bands we've never heard of, because it gives us the chance to check out some new music, and if we don't like what we hear, we can always go back to the stuff we know and be completely satisfied.......

Famous rocker and local dude Bon Jovi doesn't like that the name of the Mijovi energy drink is so similar to his own, so he's got his lawyer sending them letters telling them to stop using it, and suggesting something like "My Jovi" instead. Which... actually makes it look more like "Bon Jovi" to us. (Via Jill) More news about toxic gas leaks! The Oxford Valley Mall in Langhorne was closed early yesterday morning when......

In celebration of Shark Week, the Adventure Aquarium is hosting a unique event at its Delaware Waterfront location. Breakfast With the Sharks serves up a hot buffet breakfast from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM, followed by a scavenger hunt, a 'meet and greet' with aquarium......

Happy Father's Day! For those of you who have dads, are dads, or know dads, this one's for you, from all of us at the Gothamist network. It was a week of bizarre, embarassing headlines at DCist. The trial of the local administrative law judge who sued his cleaners for $54 million over a pair of missing pants left everyone shaking their heads. Then the capital city was nearly brought to its knees, twice, by......

Even though we kinda just bitched you out for not going to smaller venues and supporting smaller artists, we would love it if you joined us tonight over the bridge at Camden's large outdoor venue, The Tweeter Center. Yes, we're sure there will be a lot of emo and punk kids there but for whatever it's worth, it's going to be an experience and hopefully a fun one. The 2007 Honda Civic Tour features five......

As we've known for some time, the Philadelphia Zoo will soon be shipping its elephants away. The last two weekends in March will be Elephun Days at the Zoo, and will be packed with farewell activities and photo opportunities. The Zoo has even issued elephant trading cards. Tomorrow afternoon from 3pm to 6pm there's going to be an unveiling of sorts down at the Independence Seaport Museum on Penn's Landing. This is no ordinary unveiling, though. It will be the first public presenation of the Central Delaware Waterfront Planning Process' (whew, we could barely say that out loud) ideas for revamping the riverfront. It is not a stretch to say that our stretch of the Delaware River is one of the city's......

In the wake of last Friday's attack on a Germantown high school teacher by students over an iPod, the teacher's union is asking teachers to complete a school climate survey to see how safe their members feel on the job; they're claiming that many incidents of violence don't get reported due to fears that the school will be labeled "persistently dangerous." The mayoral debates should be interesting when they finally happen, because right now the......

We'd like to start this week's run-down by wishing a very happy birthday to parent blog Gothamist, which turned four on Friday. If it wasn't for them, the rest of us wouldn't be here. They celebrated their birthday by nabbing an interview with Entourage star Adrian Grenier, who misses NYC public transportation when he's working in LA. They also reported on NYU students protesting a band whose name is also known as a slur,......

That ramp at the Linc was swaying again, and this time the movement was even caught on tape. But engineers still insist the ramp is safe and sound. Regardless, it sounds like during the off-season they're going to try to find a way to make it not sway, so fans don't get so freaked out all the time. Fighting crime is clearly going to be the big issue in the 2008 mayoral race, so......

First off, let us say that although this particular item isn't about Philly, nor does it take place in Philly, or are far as we know involve Philly in any way, we're including it because it's big news, even if we mentioned it in yesterday's Whiz, too: NASA has set a time line for the realization of a manned Moon Base. Naturally, we have begun making plans to replicate their plans on the dark......

Governor Rendell has declared a temporary moratorium on developing state-owned property along the Delaware River waterfront in Philadelphia. He says he's done this to make sure the projects proposed are worth it, and are in the best interest of the neighborhoods, but the real reason seems to be to get some casinos with slot machines down there:"With the advent of gaming, these riverfront properties have a tremendous value," Rendell said.
