It's not every day you find a songwriter who's willing to open up a vein and help her audience find a groove. Fortunately, Doylestown-born Pink (a.k.a. Alecia Moore) is among that small group, and she brings the party by getting everyone up and dancing to gritty, catchy beats while challenging the heart with her raw, honest lyrics.

You know you're getting old when the pop stars of your youth have children old enough to be pop stars. As a critic, it gives you a very Statler and Waldorf vibe even before you reach the venue: you just know you're going to be in your seat, muttering incoherently about "these kids today" and their sorry excuse for music, vehemently demanding that they get off your lawn.

The circus is in town! Well, theoretically. Britney Spears brings her Circus tour to the Wachovia Center this Sunday and opening for her is 19 year-old Kristinia DeBarge. Yes, of those DeBarges—but she's working to forge a name of her own. The pop tart progeny is finding her own niche with her debut album Exposed, its most notable track being "Goodbye," which samples the chorus from the 1969 Steam song "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye." DeBarge joins Britney as well as Jordin Sparks, season six winner of American Idol on an extensive world tour. Phillyist had an opportunity to catch up with Kristinia before joining Britney's crazy train . Here's what she had to say.

A lot of people, when they first hear Duffy (MySpace), might have a knee-jerk reaction of, "Oh, that girl is just trying to sound like Amy Winehouse." It's an understandable, if not entirely fair, reaction to the 24-year-old Welsh singer's brand of neo-soul music. Duffy's music is, at its best, a heck of a lot more thoughtful and personal than Winehouse's. At a minimum, Duffy is unencumbered by the melodrama that seems to consume Winehouse—both musically and personally.

Republican Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin, the original "Hockey Mom," brings her only expertise to the Wachovia Center this Saturday to drop the first puck as part of the Flyers' Season Opener against the New York Rangers. While this is a brilliant bit of publicity on behalf of the Flyers, it is more a continuation of Ms. Palin's involvement with a team that likes to play dirty. Only the Flyers usually win.

At tonight's Coldplay show at the Wachovia Center, it'll be one of the first times in a while that we'll be actually looking forward to a band playing mostly new tracks. We have been digging Viva la Vida. After the stuffy snoozefest that was XY, Viva la Viva feels like a breath of fresh air. But wait, the air is not exactly fresh, it's tinged with something slightly psychedelic. It's fitting that the first track is called "Life in Technicolor." It's like the band remembered there were more colors and sounds than "epic" and "orchestral." One reviewer referred to the band as "British art-rockers," and although when we think art rock we think TV on the Radio more than Coldplay, we can't deny that the band seems to be pushing its musical boundaries on this album. Almost every song has an arrangement that signals the band was seeking reinvention rather than resigning itself to a tried and true formula. Viva gets at that creativity that initially drew us to the band.

Have you ever gotten into a debate about music with a hardcore Rush (MySpace) fan? If not, here's what you need to do. Next time you feel compelled to take your life in your hands, try to convince a Rush fan that Rush is not the greatest band ever. The loyalty they engender in their fans is something unmatched by, well, anyone. We'd always looked on Rush fans' fervor with a grain of salt, no more or less justified than any other person's love of their favorite band. We're just going to come out and say it: we were dead wrong.

If you haven’t noticed, the Philadelphia sports climate is pretty bleak these days. The Sixers suck. The Eagles are golfing. The Flyers are irrelevant. And the Phillies are currently nickel-and-diming perhaps the greatest slugger in a generation, hoping that an arbitrator will make him play for a relative pittance. So there is pretty much no reason to go to an arena or stadium near you to watch our local pituitary cases compete in the games of chance. And yet, on February 1, the lowest common denominator of our fine city will flock to the Wachovia Center. They will begin tailgating at 4 a.m. Come 6 a.m., they will enter the building, whereupon they will take their seats and longingly ogle the “Wingettes” in their bras and panties. They will buy $8 Bud Lights from the concession stands, and will be completely wasted before many of us have stepped in the shower. They will stand and cheer at fat losers as they stuff their filthy gobs with artery-clogging Buffalo wings. When the spectacle has concluded and a “winner” is announced, these fine gents, fresh from the most intimate contact they have had with a woman in eons, will file out of the doors and head straight to the nearest strip club to further sate their throbbing libidos. Bear in mind that this will probably be the most intellectual activity that these fellows will have indulged in all week. At the end of the day, they will vomit in the public common and drunkenly drive their vehicles home in a treacherous version of “Commuter Roulette.” Sound like fun? Then, by all means, head over to South Philly for the 610-WIP-sponsored Wing Bowl 16, “The Showdown in the Hot Sauce.” (To tailgate. This flimsy excuse to get wasted actually sold out a major sports arena... AGAIN.)

The Drexel hoopsters had a rough week. The men (9-12, 2-7) dropped an overtime game at home to William & Mary last Wednesday, then got whooped by VCU on the road. The women (10-8, 5-2) saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end with an overtime loss of their own, against Towson. Then they couldn't seal the deal against William & Mary, and ended up giving up a late lead to lose their second straight. The women will have a good chance to bounce back this week, though, going on the road to the CAA cellar-dwellers: Northeastern tomorrow night, then Hofstra Sunday afternoon. Maybe the men will get a couple win as well, as they're playing a couple teams as bad as they are: at Georgia State tonight, then hosting Northeastern late Saturday afternoon. After losing to the Knicks (81-89) on Friday and beating the Charlotte Bobcats away Saturday night (103-96), the Sixers hope to score big at home: seven of their next eight games are at the Wachovia Center. Catch them Wednesday battling the Milwaukee Bucks at 7PM (get tickets or watch).

After losing to the Pacers Monday (110-103), and the Pistons Wednesday (86-78), the Sixers are hoping to beat the Knicks tonight. They’re hoping that snaps them out of the losing funk they’ve been in, which has seen them lose 10 of their last 12 games.

The Sixers lost on the road to the Celtics on Friday, but finally beat the Toronto Raptors, the first time this season, 99-95 Saturday. They’re playing the Pacers today at 2PM (watch or get tickets) and the Pistons on Wednesday night at 7PM (watch or get tickets) at the Wachovia Center.

After snapping their losing streak, the Sixers face off against the Toronto Raptors tomorrow night at 7PM at the Wachovia Center (get tickets or watch); Monday they’ll host the Indiana Pacers at 2PM at the Wach. (get tickets or watch)

The Sixers weren’t able to pull it out against the Bulls, losing with a disappointing 100-97 score. Unfortunately it seems the Inqy is right: they’re not such a great team this year.

In hoops, the Sixers try to break their five-game losing streak with a win tonight against the Chicago Bulls at the Wachovia Center, 7PM. Broadcast on Comcast Sportsnet, or buy tickets.

Phillyist just came across an interesting tidbit while scouring philly.com blogs: The Temple Owls and coach Fran Dunphy will be taking the subway to their game versus the Duke Blue Devils at the Wachovia Center tonight. Coach says, "This is a tremendous opportunity for our team to travel as Philadelphians do on a daily basis to and from work," and so it is. Good for them. But just a heads up to all those commuters that the boys will be heading out at 4:45, getting on the Broad Street Line at Cecil B. Moore and off at Pattison, so if you’re heading south you may run into a wall of owls. Luckily they don’t bite—unless you’re a devil.

Let's get this out of the way up front. People went absolutely nutso for Fall Out Boy, to the point where this fan could only concentrate on Patrick Stump while he was doing backing vocals on Gym Class Heroes' performance of "Clothes Off."
