Federal and state officials will get a tour of the damage to the Jersey shore in order to assess how much, if any, disaster aid will be provided. Last weekend's storms caused millions of dollars in damage to public and private property.
Brian Malloy, a math teacher at Bodine High School for International Affairs, was named Philadelphia's Teacher of the Year award last night. He was among 12 finalists.
In the wake of Super Tuesday, the Daily News and the Inquirer both take a look at how the candidates fared and what voter turnout was like in the area. The Daily News also reveals that the workers in the city commissioners office received over 400 calls from people who thought it was Election Day in Philadelphia, and who were trying to figure out why they couldn't find a polling place that was open. Um... wow.
The FBI is looking for a filthy dude in connection with the robbery yesterday of the Trumark Financial Credit Union at 1811 John F. Kennedy Blvd. He's a black man in his 30s "who was wearing sunglasses, a dirty gray suit jacket and dirty white sneakers." He got away with some cash - and a dye pack, which was later found exploded at a train concourse at 17th and JFK.
As if too many drivers doesn't create enough gridlock, yesterday's traffic jam on 95 was caused by an injured hawk on the road. We're kind of surprised no drivers just blew over the thing thinking it was an oversized pigeon.
The PA budget got held up a bit yesterday by some further discussion, especially about the Senate plan to fund hazardous-sites cleanup by taking $40 million from a land preservation fund. Lawmakers have made the wise decision to not decide on the most contentious bits until later, so the budget did indeed get through both Houses yesterday and will be signed by Rendell later today... hopefully, anyway.
Mumia Abu-Jamal is up for another appeal. If he wins, his life could be spared. If he loses, "he will be in imminent peril of lethal injection."
So, how about this mayoral race? Who would have figured a month ago that Milton Street would successfully defeat challenges to his place on the ballot (though admittedly for a position as Council at-large, and not as mayor) and would be preparing to go out campaigning, while Brady sat in a courtroom, desperately trying to keep his name on that same ballot (yes, he went to court yesterday, and Mayorpalooza was blogging it; there should be a decision next week, although regardless of what that decision is, there will be an appeal).
The Inquirer looks at why there won't by a female mayor of Philadelphia any time soon, and at how and what the male candidates are doing lately.
The Inquirer asks whether Pennsylvania is even more Democratic blue than it used to be, and warns that the Democratic primary race for Mayor of Philadelphia is already heating up.
Philadelphia Inquirer editor Amanda Bennett has been ousted (she'll leave officially at the end of the year) and replaced by former Inquirer reporter, and former NPR executive, Bill Marimow. Meanwhile, the paper could also be losing some staff - reports vary as to how much, but 150 (out of a current total of 425) is the number being mentioned the most.
The Philadelphia Traithlon cancelled the swim section this weekend, but ironically the cancellation had nothing to do with the fears that plagued the area the past two weeks of the Schuylkill being polluted by toxic substances. Instead, the problem was substantial amounts of debris in the water. The article isn't clear about the exact nature of the debris, but we're hoping it was just stuff like branches and leaves that had fallen in due to all the rain. And not, like, chunks of twisted metal or something.
