Two more obituaries for print media: the Germantown Courier and the Mount Airy Times Express closed this week. The parent publisher, the Journal Register Company laid off staff and shut down operations on Monday.
Andrew Mogilyansky, the Bucks County man accused of luring girls from a Russian orphanage and forcing them into prostitution, will remain behind bars while he awaits trial here, a federal judge ruled yesterday. Yesterday, Mogilyansky was grated house arrest, but U.S. District Judge Mary A. McLaughlin overruled the decision on appeal. The judge agreed with prosecutors that Mogilyanskhy’s wealth, language skills and global connections render the multimillionaire a flight risk.
The much anticipated World War II memorial opened yesterday in Trenton. The memorial is located directly across from the Statehouse’s main entrance. Veterans from all over attended yesterday’s dedication.
Yesterday City Councilman Darrell Clarke moved to lift a little known, almost four-decades-old city law that bans men massaging women and women massaging men.
Police are seeking a rapist who assaulted a woman in a party bus parked at Lincoln Financial Field during Sunday's Eagles game.

Some kids got sick at Council Rock High School North in Newtown, Bucks County yesterday after taking a drug called Snurf. We'd make fun of the Daily News for doing their research on Snurf at the Urban Dictionary, but really, that's where we'd probably end up, too.
29-year-old Anthony Derubeis of Upper Darby decided to barbecue some books on his grill yesterday morning. When firefighters arrived, he started throwing stuff at them, like plates and full water bottles. Then he went inside and refused to come out, and eventually ended up getting into a fight with police, who subdued him. "We feel the guy may have some mental-health issues that have to be dealt with," said the Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood Sr. No kidding!

Today is Philadelphia City Council's last meeting before summer break, so they're going to try to make decisions on a lot of leftover items at the last minute, including proposals to hike fines for littering, privatize the city's sludge plant, take control of Fairmount Park, force contractors to keep sidewalks open during construction projects, and allow dining decks fronting the Manayunk canal. We suspect they will also all join in on a rousing chorus of "School's Out for the Summer" at the end of the session.
A memorandum sent to the School Reform Commission from the state's school-safety watchdog informed the group that it was flunking when it comes to properly disciplining the majority of violent students and thoroughly reporting serious crimes.
Apparently our new soccer club's anthem is "I'm Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover." Well it's appropriate for today, anyway.
A five-alarm fire blazed for more than three hours yesterday evening in a warehouse in the 1300 block of North Front Street in Kensington. Service on the portion of the Market-Frankford El that runs nearby was halted during the fire. Firefighters were finally able to get it under control around 7:30PM. No one was injured.
Seven state lawmakers, naming the city as the defendant, brought a lawsuit before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court yesterday asking that all construction of the proposed SugarHouse Casino be halted, "contending its license to build on submerged land beyond the river's edge is illegal."
In a vaguely related story, an American Bar Association report released yesterday says that the Pennsylvania death penalty system is deeply flawed and the state is at risk of executing an innocent person.
