Every weekday of December (except for December 25, that is), Phillyist will be counting down to 2009 with our highlights from the past year and our predictions for the next. If you have a list you'd like to submit, let us know!

Everyone has a story. Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, who plays Johnny Brenda's tonight, has a story that reads like a film. His name alone is a mouthful. Then we read some clips. Another singer whose self-destruction was somehow wrapped up in his musical talent, therefore making it okay for his implosion to be public rather than private? Boring. Yet his music transcends the hard-luck hype. His voice is contemplative, yet playful.
This was the one show of the year I went to strictly on a friend's recommendation, having never heard of the band. It was worth it. Bradford Cox's creepy demeanor only adds to the show. The droning guitars and heavy drums created a melancholy, fugue-like state that I'd gladly return to next time Deerhunter is in town. There's nothing like going to a concert and leaving feeling like you've just been mindfucked.
Keep in mind that despite the "top ten" designation, these are in no particular order. Also, most of these bands have been around for a few years, but I only discovered them this year. And just a quick warning: I use some NSFW language in this post. So sue me.
Why? Because tonight we're going to Karaoke Obscura, a DIY karaoke event that happens the first Thursday of every month at 12 Steps Down (831 Christian St.). This isn't the run of the mill frat-tastic karaoke. It's indie style, with all of the songs you love but are never available. Check out the song list. A little TV on the Radio, a lot of the Smiths, some Pixies, and anything else you can think of. Personally, we are planning to get our friend hammered and make her sing "Decatur" in her best Sufjan.
Every Tuesday and Thursday, we'll be posting events that are going on sale during the current week. This Tuesday post only collects the early announcements, so definitely check back on Thursday for the latest ticket news.

Phillyist is pleased as punch to announce our participation in a very cool contest/giveaway. You can check out the web page here, but we'll give you the background: super fun indie trio The Noisettes are on tour, opening for TV on the Radio, and they're coming to the Troc in our own hometown on April 20th (sorry, the show is already sold out!). And after they run across the nation opening for TV on the Radio, the Noisettes are going to do it all over again, this time opening for another incredible indie rock band, Bloc Party (that time they'll hit the area on June 5th, at the Tower Theatre). Meanwhile, the Noisettes are releasing a new record on April 17th called What's the Time Mr. Wolf? (which is a great name for a record, btw), and Bloc Party recently put out their own disc, A Weekend in the City (we've been listening to it, and it's pretty cool; the New New Wave goodness you've come to expect from the Party boys). The punchline: you could win both CDs, plus a special signed 7", if you enter the giveaway.
While everyone else was writing about this yesterday, I was too busy working [read: getting a tattoo of Barbaro on my shoulder while listening to Bad Brains].
I can't believe this year is over. It has come and gone in a haze of concerts, martinis, deadlines, endings, beginnings, highs and lows.
The Roots brought down the house at the Kimmel Center on Friday night, bringing a rather stagnant crowd to its feet for a two-and-a-half hour set that spanned the entire Roots discography.
