Yasha Butler's designs are, for lack of a better word, awesome. Ceramicist Butler is a Turkish transplant who has found a home, and a studio, in our great city (she also keeps a studio in Turkey!). She started out with simple, organic clay pots and bowls and has more recently delved into the world of jewelry. Her jewelry is absolutely fantastic. She, fittingly, calls it bone jewelry. The earrings and necklaces are decorated with single......

When the weather outside is frightful, thoughts may not immediately turn to the contents of the freezer. Phillyist thinks this is a major oversight: what about ice cream and warm pie? Hot fudge sundaes? (Do you see where we’re going with this?) The folks at Turkey Hill are set to help you mend your misguided snacking ways with their 12 Days of Ice Cream, which starts today and runs through December 25. Every day will......

The holidays kind of snuck up on us this year. Perhaps because Thanksgiving was so early. After Turkey Day was over, it was still too early to get into the Christmannakkanzaa spirit. (This Phillyist adheres to a strict "No Christmas music before December 1" rule.) And then we got caught up with other things, and we didn't really notice that, yep, we're in holiday season. It took Thursday night's WXPN Musicians On Call benefit concert......

Last year, we told you what we like to do with our Thanksgiving leftovers. Others take the leftover turkey and make soup or pot pies. Some eat hot turkey sandwiches for weeks. We'd imagine that the week after Thanksgiving isn't a good time at establishments like Bassett's Original Turkey or Boston Market, because, let's face it, it'll be at least a few weeks before anyone is ready for turkey again. But we've gotta eat something......

Ah, Turkey Day. The official kick-off of six weeks of too much eating, too much drinking, and probably a little too much carousing. If you're like Phillyist, part of this weekend will be devoted to making sure all the Thanksgiving fixings are squared away in the pantry (or else, trying to find someone who will feed you that day). In the rush of the holidays, though, it's easy to forget those that can't stock up......

What's new and/or interesting on television this week. Cities of the Underworld (Mon,......

So you thought that Starbucks was finished with its quest for total domination in the land of hot caffeinated beverages? Maybe they are. They are not, however, finished with their domination of early morning (and even mid-afternoon) munchies. Tomorrow (Tuesday, May 22), Starbucks will be launching its new warm food platform. With this platform will come five breakfast sandwiches and two lunch sandwiches. If you’re more of a bagel, pastry or cookie Philadelphian, don’t......

We're not sure that anyone doesn't have a blog these days. Which is why we weren't surprised to find out that Turkey Hill Dairy, in Lancaster County, has started Ice Cream Journal, a source for "The inside scoop on ice cream and Turkey Hill Dairy." Get it? The inside scoop? Those ice cream makers are so clever! Anyway, Ice Cream Journal is a surprisingly well-written, if completely marketing-based, blog that will keep you up......

The best of the internet, squirted out in flavorful neon globules, just for you. Jess at Apropos of Something has exposed himself (and his friends!) to the horror that is the Jones Soda Holiday Pack - so we don't have to! His reviews of sodas with flavors like "Pea," "Turkey and Gravy," and "Dinner Roll" are both amusing and slightly nauseating. Just like the holidays! Speaking of the holidays, here's a holiday gift from us......

In this Phillyist's family, Thanksgiving was always about watching the University of Texas play Texas A&M (Hook 'em and Gig 'em, respectively.) Invariably, things would become less-than-pretty. So, in the spirit of nostalgia for Turkey Day sporting-related fighting, we bring you this video, via commenter sfg, courtesy of Greg Hartnett.......

As Phillyist gathers with family and friends to fill ourselves with Turkey, Tofurky, and Turduckens - we'd like to wish you and yours a very happy & safe holiday weekend. You might see a post from us here and there, but mostly you can expect to see us again on the other side of Sunday - because in true American fashion, we intend to gorge ourselves until we're too stuffed to waddle over to the......

Know how, on Thanksgiving, we tend to eat (and decorate with!) a lot of corn? You've got your colored, dried ears of corn in the centerpiece. You've got creamed corn or corn pudding or corn on the cob or cornbread or cornbread stuffing. But that's all old hat. Now, anybody from my part of the country will tell you that the first Thanksgiving didn't really happen in November of 1620 in Plymouth, but in......

Philly’s classical music scene is really in full swing this week, only taking a break off for Halloween (but who isn’t?). Stay tuned for Phillyist’s review of La Bohème, which continues at the Academy of Music through Sunday. Monday The internationally renowned Guarneri Quartet with Cecile Licad (piano) will play works by Haydn, Janácek and Brahms. The Brahms piano quintet is perhaps one of the most moving of all works in the chamber repertoire......

Merciful heavens! Turkey Hill has taken Tastykake's chocolate cup cakes and turned them into a frozen confection. (They've done it with the Kandy Kake too!) Has the universe gone topsy-turvy? Usually, this Phillyist shies away from ice cream cake...but cup cake ice cream? This we may have to investigate further. (via)......

Thanksgiving is about family, but let's face it - many of us are in it for the turkey. Thanksgiving wouldn't be Thanksgiving without a tryptophan-induced coma after making merry with your loved ones? The vast majority of Americans are used to seeing the big-breasted, mass-slaughtered frozen turkey direct from the grocery store deep freeze. There are other options -- just stroll into D'Angelo Bros. on the Italian Market or hit Halteman's at the Reading Terminal......

So, Philadelphia is the eighteenth-most liberal city in the United States, eh? Well, it could be worse. Philly might have made the top ten. The Cranky Cocktail finds it very interesting that there are very few fundamentally American spirits of prominence out there. Off the top of his head, he can come up with two: Bourbon and applejack. It used to be three, until The Great Drought put paid to most domestic rye production. Rye......
