  • The Daily News discusses the pros and cons of the city's plan to fit out Philly with surveillance cameras. The folks quoted here from either side have pretty poor arguments to back up their positions; the ACLU spokesperson says even if the cameras make us safer, we might lose the "joys of anonymity" and have to live in a "less pleasant" society. Um, so what? Meanwhile, DA Lynne Abraham says (and we're paraphrasing slightly here), "There are already cameras everywhere else, so why not? C'mon, everybody else is doing it!" Which is, of course, a terrible argument for doing anything. Really the most compelling argument for the cameras is the evidence from similar programs in other cities, and from a trial run in our own, that they really do help to keep criminals off the streets and decrease violence. And we could certainly use a decrease in violence in the city right now.

Oh, and the Phillies won, too. Woo hoo!

  • The cabbies weren't the only one's protesting yesterday: several thousand people showed up at Love Park to support immigrant rights. Congress has recently been considering an overhaul of immigration law, and the demonstrators want lawmakers to help the millions of illegal immigrants in the US to settle and work here legally. Immigration is always a touchy subject in America, and particularly in today's climate, but it's hard to disagree with one Nigerian woman quoted in the article above:
"This country was built by immigrants, Pittsburgh in particular," she said. "This is supposed to be a land of freedom, that's why they came."
