Phillyist Interviews... Funnyman Chip Chantry

A lot of comedians need a shtick. And that's not to say it's a bad thing: heck, a lot of trailblazing comedians relied on their shticks and achieved great success and influenced comedians who followed them. George Carlin's profanity and Sam Kinison's scream (without either of which, we would not have the brilliance of Denis Leary), Gallagher's sledge-o-matic (which is directly to blame for Carrot Top, who was actually surprisingly funny when this Phillyist saw him many, many years ago), Foxworthy's "You might be a redneck..." (which is probably the greatest one-liner gimmick ever). So we love comedians with shtick; but sometimes, it's refreshing to see a comedian who can just go on stage and be themselves, and be very, very funny. We also love local talent. To our delight, we found both in local comedian Chip Chantry.

We bring you the buzz in the 215 blogs this week.

Don't forget, if your work day gets rough, that it's actually Wednesday and not Tuesday. In Holidayland, where the weeks are short and the thunderstorms the weathermen have been insisting on for almost two weeks continue to evade radar. Evadar? Oh, nevermind. Hopefully we haven't jinxed the mild dry spell.

We hope you're already aware that Sara Sherr, Philly's own friendly neighborhood music writer/show booker/show promoter/DJ/karaoke hostess/performer, has a regular event called Sugar Town highlighting the work of lady rockers and DJs, and that the next entry in the series takes place this Saturday night at Tritone. But we wanted to highlight this particular Sugar Town, as it features some folks we've been listening to a lot lately: H*E*R and Alice Cohen. H*E*R is a band out of NYC headed by singer-songwriter Yvette Perez, also of avant-pop/jazz quintet Birdbrain. On their latest release, Songs About the Mysteries of Housework and Nature (a title that recalls that of the Talking Heads album More Songs About Buildings and Food), H*E*R also has a decidedly jazzy, avant garde sound, with lyrics that are indeed about housework and nature sung hauntingly over top of squealing horns. The music is contemplative, low-key, and slowly paced.

The weekend is still barely visible over the horizon, but that doesn't mean you can't have some weekendly fun upon this unseasonably warm eve. Here are a few things to do so you can tell your friends how immersed you are in city life.
