It's a sad day at the New Bolton Center: Barbaro, the little horse that could, was euthanized at 10:30 this morning. He had undergone surgery on Saturday to attach an "external skeletal fixation device," designed to keep weight off the leg he hurt in the Preakness last year. Although those of us not in the know felt good about his chances after he pulled through initial surgery in May, Barbaro's recovery was far from over.......

A Philly area horse has won the Kentucky Derby again! This time it was Barbaro, beating the closest horse by almost seven lengths. Barbaro is owned by a couple from West Grove, Chester County, and trained by Michael Matz from Collegeville. Matz survived the crash of United Flight 232 in 1989, saving the lives of three children, who were in the stands to see his horse's victory on Saturday. To quote About.com, "The Philadelphia......

Friday night, Ryan Howard came to the plate representing the winning run in a 9-7 game in the bottom of the ninth inning against Florida closer Todd Jones, and Howard struck out looking. Todd Jones collected his 200th save, and finished off the Phils on a night when it looked like it would be hard to come back, but Philadelphia fought back from a 8-3 deficit in the sixth inning to make it competitive again......
