Memorial Day is next Monday. This means very little in the scheme of commercial holiday celebrating, of course, except for the fact that it means a day off and, for whatever reason, official permission to wear white. And how, whether clad in white or not, do most people celebrate Memorial Day?

As I write this, I've just returned from dinner with friends at Bistro Romano. I almost didn't go, because the restaurant's menu on MenuPages indicated that its prices didn't mesh so well with the Unemployment Diet, which I am still on. (I've lost twelve pounds, though!) Fortunately, my buddy Tom, who chose the restaurant, told me about Bistro Romano's Pasta Night on Mondays: a salad and any pasta dish off the menu for less than the cost of one of the pasta dishes alone. I ordered the lobster ravioli, because it's something I love and don't get to eat too often.

getting was from my endless supply of dairy products: mostly Wawa milk and string cheese from Trader Joe's. But my body needed real, hearty protein. And iron. (I've been dragging and figured that not having enough iron could be a contributing factor. Never mind that I've been averaging four and a half hours of sleep per night, because that's clearly not the problem, right?) I needed red meat, and soon.

Spring appears to have, er, sprung, at least temporarily, in most of the Ist-A-Verse, so naturally, we're all feeling pretty good. (Yes, we know that spring doesn't start till later this month. Just let us enjoy our weather!) And that makes us that much more eager to share all of the nifty things we're up to...

Grocery store bathrooms tend to scare me into testing the strength of either my thighs, as I squat like my life depends on it, or my bladder, as I decide the possibility of wetting myself is more appealing than spending another moment in such a grotesque hellhole. I think it’s that they’re generally rarely used and even more rarely cleaned. They’re also not necessarily easy to find - I’ve been to some that required...

It got cold last night, so I cleared some space in my kitchen with the intention of making soup, but changed my mind when I opened my fridge and saw all of the corn tortillas I've had in there for a while and really needed to get rid of. So I decided to dip into my special store of Mexican food ingredients. I bring them back from home, whenever I'm in Texas. But I have discovered that Old El Paso Red Enchilada Sauce is available at FreshGrocer (albeit the mild variety only), and once in a while I notice that Trader Joe's is peddling red enchilada sauce of their own. (Unfortunately, any time I want green sauce, I've got to get my mother to ship it.) You're not going to be able to find the good stuff, I fear (even the Mexican grocery stores don't always have it), but you can definitely make passable chilaquiles (essentially, unrolled enchiladas) with the sauces you can find around here. The amount of each ingredient is variable, depending on how much food you want to have. What's important is that the sauce coats the tortillas thoroughly, without making them too soggy. The amounts included below are approximations of what I made last night.

You know who's going to be upset about those Bikini Bandits? The Houston school system. Houstonist also reports on some redevelopment shenanigans over a landmark theater.

It's hot, and that means it could be pretty difficult to keep your energy up between breakfast and lunch, or during those last few hours of your workday. Neither your wallet nor your waistline can afford to have two full lunches, but you are falling asleep at your desk. So what's a working stiff to do?

Dear America (it’s ambitious, I know – just bear with me):

I recently had the occasion to spend an evening cater waitering. Willingly. (I didn't look nearly as snazzy as this guy, but I actually had a lot of fun.)

Before we leave you for the day, Phillyist would like to wish you a happy (and safe) St. Patrick's Day. We're going to be watching basketball, ourselves; but you guys drink a Guiness for us!

Maybe it's us, but the idea of buttered crustless white bread topped with cucumbers has never been appealing. But we do love cucumbers, and occasionally, we've been known to have tea parties, so clearly, some kind of cucumber sandwich is in order at times. This Mediterranean spin on the teatime favorite is sure to please any guests who, like us, have an aversion to buttered cucumber slices.

Dear Trader Joe’s of Philadelphia:

This week, Return to Sender and Phillial team up to give the men of Philadelphia the hand they so desperately need.
