Usually, before going to the Tower Theatre, Phillyist likes to grab a bite in Center City Philadelphia and then jump on the 69th Street-bound El. That's what we'd be doing tomorrow night before the Stephen Lynch show, too, except that we're meeting up with people who'll be driving in for the show, so we've just agreed to meet them in Upper Darby for a pre-show dinner. Only problem is, we have no idea whatsoever...

This Phillyist hearts Rilo Kiley. Jenny Lewis is our long-standing girl crush. So we're pumped for tonight, when they'll be at the Tower Theatre, touring after their new album, Under the Blacklight.

Sunday night I was proud to call Philadelphia my home. The audience at the Keane concert was electric. The lead singer of Keane, Tom Chaplin, even commented several times that "The audience in Philadelphia rocks!" and asked "Why didn't we come back here sooner?" That's a good question. Why didn't you come back sooner, Keane? Your show was incredible. I was there to see the opening act, Rocco Deluca and The Burden and was...
Memorial Day weekend is filled with block parties, barbecues, picnics and family. If you get tired of your perverted Uncle or nosy Aunt, then head over to Tower Theatre to see Rocco Deluca and the Burden opening for Keane. Rocco Deluca and the Burden hail from Long Beach, CA and just released their debut album I Trust You To Kill Me. "Colorful," their new hit single, has wowed critics in both the magazine and...

Phillyist is pleased as punch to announce our participation in a very cool contest/giveaway. You can check out the web page here, but we'll give you the background: super fun indie trio The Noisettes are on tour, opening for TV on the Radio, and they're coming to the Troc in our own hometown on April 20th (sorry, the show is already sold out!). And after they run across the nation opening for TV on the Radio, the Noisettes are going to do it all over again, this time opening for another incredible indie rock band, Bloc Party (that time they'll hit the area on June 5th, at the Tower Theatre). Meanwhile, the Noisettes are releasing a new record on April 17th called What's the Time Mr. Wolf? (which is a great name for a record, btw), and Bloc Party recently put out their own disc, A Weekend in the City (we've been listening to it, and it's pretty cool; the New New Wave goodness you've come to expect from the Party boys). The punchline: you could win both CDs, plus a special signed 7", if you enter the giveaway.

What do you think of when you hear the word "Genesis?" A book of the Bible? A planet forbidden? Or a cheesy '80s and '90s pop group fronted by Phil Collins? If so, there's a whole other Genesis just waiting for you to discover. In the early '70s, the band Genesis was fronted by Peter Gabriel, and was writing and performing incredible, epic, complex, theatrical, beautifully orchestrated, metal-style progressive rock story-songs. Genesis in that form sadly no longer exists (although Tony Banks, Michael Rutherford, and Phil Collins are announcing officially at a press conference on November 7th that they're getting back together and going on tour next year; here's hoping there are some Philly dates - and that they play some of their '70s stuff), but we do have their old albums to listen to (classics like Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway), and for the live experience, we have The Musical Box.
To be fair, although their heyday was definitely the '90s, British band Massive Attack has actually been out there making music on and off, in one form or another, since they first appeared on the scene way back in 1988, and in fact they are in the process of putting together a new album right now (with the intriguing and provocative title of Weather Underground). Apparently only original members Robert "3D" Del Naja and Grant "Daddy G" Marshall are left now - we miss Tricky! - but in whatever format they now exist, they'll be performing at the Tower Theatre tomorrow night.

A piece of musical history will take the stage tonight at the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby when Ray Davies, founding member (along with his brother Dave) of the hugely influential British rock band the Kinks, comes out to perform. Unfortunately, Mr. Davies is sounding a bit like a piece of history, too, on his latest CD Other People's Lives. It's not a bad disc, really; there are some catchy pop rock tracks on it, like the opener, "Things Are Gonna Change (The Morning After)," and the interesting "Stand Up Comic." But then there are rather irritating and silly tracks like "Is There Life After Breakfast?" Plus, the album as a whole just sounds a bit tired and old-fashioned, and overstays its welcome at 13 tracks and a full hour in length.
