Phillyist Playlist: Tori Amos at the Tower

Saturday night, the Tower Theater hosts Tori Amos (MySpace) in what is guaranteed to be a gorgeous performance. This Phillyist has seen her perform many times, including once in a solo performance at the Tower, and each time has been remarkable. Amos seems to have softened her lyrics with age and wisdom, and her music no longer seems consumed by rageragerage overtones, as it was through the 90s. Her tenth album, era and show Amos reconnecting with the piano. As a longtime Tori Amos fan, it is so refreshing to hear a new album with "vintage" Tori.

Phillyist Playlist: Eddie Vedder at Tower Theater

Anyone who has had both a pulse and a penchant for some loud guitar rock in the last twenty years can probably stroll down memory lane and recall one of the first times they heard or saw Pearl Jam. It might have been the crazy "I'm gonna murder you" eyes of leader singer Eddie Vedder in the ground-breaking "Jeremy" video, their Woodstock '94 performance, their well-publicized boycott of the fascists at Ticketmaster, or their recent tours selling out festivals and stadiums around the country. For this Phillyist, it was Vedder in the "Even Flow" video, standing atop the rafters at a live show, arms outstretched before plummeting into the audience. The first cassette (yes, cassette, that's right) we ever purchased was Vs. the first week it came out, and you better believe it was the first of many Pearl Jam albums to come. And yes, we still have ALL those cassettes...why, you wanna make something of it?

Phillyist Playlist: The Decemberists at the Tower

Back in February, we encouraged you to pounce on tickets to see The Decemberists (MySpace) right when they went on sale. The show is now a couple days away, and if you didn't take our advice then, you're in luck, because there are still some tickets left for Saturday night's show.

When Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova won the Oscar for Best Song, I cheered. It was involuntary. I scared the gaggle of gay men with whom I was watching the awards. (They were cheering for Enchanted.)

Yes, it's Cinco de Mayo. We've got one event related to the fiesta, but that doesn't mean you can't throw together your own party. Just get some tequila and the number you'll need to call out of work tomorrow morning.

The last time we saw The National was on their gigantic tour with Arcade Fire. In the midst of The National’s set at The Tower Theater, this Phillyist was overtaken. “This is the best band ever,” we thought. Well, we were thinking that until Arcade Fire came on and blew our ears off…but we knew the band was going to be something worth loving. And shortly thereafter, Internet critics began to think along the same...

Tuesday night, we carted ourselves out to the hot, misty expanse of the Tower Theater to see Bloc Party with the Maccabees and the Noisettes. British band the Maccabees started things off right with a rousing set which, they confessed, was their first performance as a band in America, and their first performance in front of a seated audience. They didn't sound like they were doing anything for the first time, though; they played strong, loud, post-rock tracks with emotional vocals and fantastic beats. We were racking our brains trying to come up with a comparison to describe what they sounded like, and then realized they sounded vaguely like Bloc Party, which made perfect sense. Anyway, we were very impressed.

We've talked about this show, and the contests associated with it, quite a lot, but we thought we'd give it all one more mention, now that the show is practically here. We are referring, of course, to the show tomorrow night at the Tower Theater, wherein the Noisettes (MySpace) and The Maccabees (MySpace) will open for Bloc Party (MySpace). It's an indie rock triple feature! How can you resist, we ask you? We couldn't, which is why we'll be going ourselves.

Sunday night I was proud to call Philadelphia my home. The audience at the Keane concert was electric. The lead singer of Keane, Tom Chaplin, even commented several times that "The audience in Philadelphia rocks!" and asked "Why didn't we come back here sooner?" That's a good question. Why didn't you come back sooner, Keane? Your show was incredible. I was there to see the opening act, Rocco Deluca and The Burden and was...

Memorial Day weekend is filled with block parties, barbecues, picnics and family. If you get tired of your perverted Uncle or nosy Aunt, then head over to Tower Theatre to see Rocco Deluca and the Burden opening for Keane. Rocco Deluca and the Burden hail from Long Beach, CA and just released their debut album I Trust You To Kill Me. "Colorful," their new hit single, has wowed critics in both the magazine and...

We told you that we dug Arcade Fire in our preview but we didn't realize how much until we left Arcade Fire's concert on Saturday night. Arcade Fire's show was one of the best shows we have ever been to, hands down. Their mission was, "to uplift fans, combat 'spiritual death' and bring back the hurdy-gurdy." They completed all three of these missions with incredible music, awesome stage presence and an overall kick-ass show....

Some of you planned your weekend in advance and got tickets through Live Nation website for the Arcade Fire show on Saturday at 8PM. That was a great idea since the show is now sold out. Most are already familiar with Arcade Fire's unique Indie-Rock sound. Featured on the cover of the May 2007 issue of Blender, Arcade Fire is "the greatest little big band in the world." Blender continues, "In three years, Montreal...

As everyone watched Haley Scarnato get her ass kicked off American Idol last night, we were at The Tower Theater watching Toby Lightman's kick-ass show. She was so good we forgot who she was opening for. Oh yeah, Taylor Hicks, the winner of American Idol's fifth season, and better known as The Soul Patrol. Toby Lightman, a native of Cherry Hill, NJ, rocked the house last night showcasing songs from her new album, Bird...

That's right, the Soul Patrol is in town. Not really sure if Philadelphia needs any more soul, but I guess we can decide that tonight. I'll be honest, I am not really a fan of Taylor Hicks. I didn't vote for him nor do I agree with America that he should have won American Idol's Season 5. He's a good performer and singer, just not an "idol" to me. His part of the show should be entertaining with well-performed music even though his newly released album is contrived, boring, and a bit adult-contemporary. It's entitled Taylor Hicks. Original, don't you think? Tonight is really about his opening act, Toby Lightman. This is truly an artist who actually still has some soul in her.
