Tower Records has been sold to a liquidation firm, which means - liquidation sales! Now, Phillyist has become accustomed to purchasing music online, generally only purchasing physical CDs direct from the artist at shows (er...sorry, Tower), but we may make an exception in the face of a sale. (We made out like a musical bandit when the HMV on Walnut closed down a few years back.) The only real question is where we're going to find a place to store the CDs.

Guster will be doing an in-store performance and signing today at Tower Records (100 South Broad Street) at 1:30 p.m. Ping pong balls not required (and if you don't get that, then you probably won't be coming to Tower Records today).

  • Even though our beloved Mayor Street wants to end homelessness in 10 years, it's actually gone up 15 percent since last year. Part of the problem, as the Daily News points out, is that even though we'd all like the problem to go away, nobody wants the solution in their backyard. Members of the City Council find themselves having to vote against proposals for homeless shelters because of resistance from residents who don't want them in their communities.

    Alex Scott started a lemonade stand to raise money. It took off, but not because the lemonade's all that good: Alex, a cancer patient, was raising money for pediatric cancer research. Alex passed away, but the stands have not: they rocketed to fame thanks to the success of racehorse Afleet Alex, who won the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.
