Put down the Pabst, folks, Philly Beer Week has officially begun. Beer enthusiasts and general tipplers alike can treat their palates to city-wide specials on Philly's numerous local craft brews and imports.

The Drexel women (15-11, 10-5) were looking like contenders after three straight wins, including a spanking of William & Mary. But then reality set in, in the form of #10 Old Dominion. The men (11-18, 4-12) didn't have to worry about being exposed as mediocre–everyone knew they stunk. But apparently they still felt compelled to show everyone, in the form of losses to William & Mary and Fairfield. Their regular season will sputter to a merciful end at home against James Madison tonight, and then at Hofstra on Saturday. The women host Towson tomorrow night, and George Mason comes to town Sunday afternoon. (Tickets for all home games are available through the Drexel Ticket Office: 1-866-4-DREXEL.)

Looking for something to do tonight? February boring you? Feel a primal need to fight the snow and the ice bearing down on our fair city? Check out The Bravery (with guests The Switches and Your Vegas) at the Fillmore at the TLA. No less than the Village Voice has proclaimed them 'New York's Next Big Thing' and the venerable Auntie Beeb called them 2005's (okay, we know it's 2008) most promising act.

The Sixers spanked the Knicks (124-84) on Wednesday night at the Wach. Tonight they will be in Orlando, then they’ll turn around and host the Magic on Wednesday at 7PM (get tickets or watch here). Here’s hoping that’ll be two for two. Tomorrow they’ll match up with the Miami Heat, against whom they are 2-0 this season.

What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.

The Drexel Lady Dragons (14-10, 9-4) got a pair of solid home wins this week, topping Delaware and James Madison. Now they'll take the show on the road, heading to William & Mary tomorrow night before a big showdown with #10 Old Dominion on Sunday. Things weren't quite as peachy for the men (11-16, 4-11). They lost a tough double-overtime game to Old Dominion last Thursday. Fortunately, they edged out a win against Delaware over the weekend. Tonight, the Dragons have an away game at William & Mary. Then they'll return home to host Fairfield Saturday afternoon. (Tickets for all home games are available through the Drexel Ticket Office: 1-866-4-DREXEL.)

Maybe you're all indie'd out and you're tired of the minimalist, navel gazing shite that got you through this bi-polar winter. Maybe you're tired of smacking yourself in the head, realizing that you could've seen a kick-ass band in the cozy comfort of Johnny Brenda's rather than the hips-to-asses crappy acoustics Electric Factory a year from now. Or maybe, it's Wednesday night and you want to tie one on and rock the hell out like it's Friday.

The Northern Liberties Winter Music Festival at The Fire is finishing up this weekend with two big shows tonight, another tomorrow night, and the climactic Radiohead Tribute Sunday night. It all sounds awesome to us, but we wanted to give a particular heads up to you guys about one of the many bands playing Saturday night: Peasant. Peasant is actually less a band and more a guy: Damien DeRose of Doylestown. We've been listening to his latest release, On the Ground, and we're pretty impressed. He's got the whole folksy, singer-songwriter, indie pop thing going on, but not in an annoying way. His work is compared to that of Elliott Smith, and while we understand and agree with that comparison, we actually enjoy this album more than most of the stuff we've heard by Smith. Every one of the thirteen tracks is lovely, melodic, catchy, and deeply felt. Peasant isn't really going to help you get your rock on, but he might warm you up on a cold winter's night.

Drexel had one of those ho-hum weeks. The women (12-10, 7-4) split their games this week. They beat up on Georgia State before falling short against VCU. The men (10-15, 3-10) couldn't keep up with George Mason, but bounced back with a solid win over Towson. Tomorrow night, the Lady Dragons will be promoting breast cancer awareness at their home game against Delaware. The players will be wearing pink headbands and wristbands, and fans who wear pink will get free admission to the game. Then they'll host James Madison on Sunday. The men have a pair of away games this week, at Old Dominion tomorrow night, then at Delaware on Saturday. (Tickets for all home games are available through the Drexel Ticket Office: 1-866-4-DREXEL.)

The last time I saw Cat Power perform was the first and only time I saw the entire Trocadero fall in love at once. Her voice and her persona could only be described as haunting yet powerful. Some people showed in the hopes that she'd fall apart, as she has been wont to do, but a lot happens in a decade. Much more centered by the time The Greatest dropped, Chan Marshall prowled the stage like a sexy animal that was caged no longer.

The weekend is still barely visible over the horizon, but that doesn't mean you can't have some weekendly fun upon this unseasonably warm eve. Here are a few things to do so you can tell your friends how immersed you are in city life.

We're kicking off a new regular feature today, and here it is! "Can't Miss This!" should be going up every weekday for the foreseeable future and, as you may have already guessed, it'll feature a handful of events going on that day in and around the city that we think are so cool you should make sure not to miss them. Hope you enjoy it!

The Drexel hoopsters had a rough week. The men (9-12, 2-7) dropped an overtime game at home to William & Mary last Wednesday, then got whooped by VCU on the road. The women (10-8, 5-2) saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end with an overtime loss of their own, against Towson. Then they couldn't seal the deal against William & Mary, and ended up giving up a late lead to lose their second straight. The women will have a good chance to bounce back this week, though, going on the road to the CAA cellar-dwellers: Northeastern tomorrow night, then Hofstra Sunday afternoon. Maybe the men will get a couple win as well, as they're playing a couple teams as bad as they are: at Georgia State tonight, then hosting Northeastern late Saturday afternoon. (Tickets for all home games are available through the Drexel Ticket Office: 1-866-4-DREXEL.)

Drexel's Lady Dragons (10-6, 5-0) ran their winning streak up to nine games with a win over UNC-Wilmington on Sunday. They'll visit conference co-leading Towson tomorrow night, then host William & Mary on Sunday. The men (9-10, 2-5) spit their past couple matchups. They beat last-place Georgia State but then dropped their home game to Hofstra. Hopefully, they'll have a better showing at home tonight against William & Mary. And then they get to go to conference leading VCU. Have fun with that. (Tickets for all home games are available through the Drexel Ticket Office: 1-866-4-DREXEL).

Fun around town, for $10 or less:

Drexel's Lady Dragons (8-6, 3-0), led by Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week Narissa Suber, extended their winning streak to seven games, beating Delaware and George Mason on the road. Now they'll look to keep up the winning ways at home, hosting Northeastern tomorrow night and UNC-Wilmington Sunday afternoon. The men (8-9, 1-4), on the other hand, look to stop their three-game skid as they face a couple of their fellow CAA cellar-dwellers at home: Tonight against Georgia State, and Saturday afternoon against Hofstra. (Tickets for all games are available through the Drexel Ticket Office: 1-866-4-DREXEL).

Color us intrigued, mildly creeped out, and super pumped for tonight's sold out show at the TLA. For you diehards who love Amputechture more than Frances, but didn't get tickets, you can always try your luck on Craigslist.

Eggers is the literary darling that some people love to hate. We admit that his ubiquitous presence around the time that A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius was published made us nauseous, but after reading the book, we understood what all of the hoopla was about. Since then, his subsequent work, such as You Shall Know Our Velocity and What Is the What, as well as being the founder of McSweeney's, The Believer, and charitable organization 826 Valencia (and its offshoots) have established him less as a literary upstart and more as a true contributor to American writing.

There is a new Queen of Soul. Sorry Mary, Alicia, and Jill, but there is a woman from Brooklyn who's reminding us all of how it's done. Her name is Sharon Jones, and she and her backing band, the Dap-Kings, will slay your ears and make you yearn for a time when people sang (and didn't sample), "Diamond in the back, sunroof top, diggin' the scene with a gangsta lean."

Keep in mind that despite the "top ten" designation, these are in no particular order. Also, most of these bands have been around for a few years, but I only discovered them this year. And just a quick warning: I use some NSFW language in this post. So sue me.

They may not actually save your soul, but the Soulsavers (MySpace) - an English production and remix team comprised of members Rich Machin and Ian Glover - do have a spiritual (though not so spiritual agnostics, like this Phillyist, can't enjoy it) new album out now (It's Not How Far You Fall, It's The Way You Land, their second) which will at least entertain you, and they're coming to the mighty North Star tonight to...

Radiohead, as everyone knows, is The Best Band in the World. But once, long ago, in the far off '90s, they just played really, really good pop music. Then came their career-changing album OK Computer. With this album, they created their own new genre - a heady, intellectual, electronica/indie pop that blew everyone's minds. It wasn't only a success and a huge turning point for Radiohead, it's a true masterpiece, and a watershed release in the history of music. So we think it's pretty cool that Philadelphia-based Radiohead tribute band Meeting in the Aisle is celebrating the album's tebth anniversary by playing the entire thing from beginning to end tonight at Grape Street.

What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend. Finishing the Game - We posted the preview for this one a ways back. It's a mockumentary about director Robert Clouse's attempt to finish the film Game of Death after the untimely death of its star, Bruce Lee. In Finishing the Game, Clouse starts a frantic search for an impersonator to replace Lee, and much wackiness and Hollywood satire ensue. Sounds like fun, but keep in...

Local student Dan Magro wears many hats. He is (as mentioned) a student, at the University of the Arts. He is a Starbucks employee in Southampton. He is a writer/filmmaker. And tonight, he will add to that hat-list "philanthropist." Magro's movie, Portraits of Sari, premieres tonight at Gershman Hall (corner of Broad and Pine), but you'll be getting more than just a movie with your attendance. It turns out that the lead actor in Portraits,...

Yes, it's that time of year again: gift-getting time! Will Santa bring you that video game console you're hoping for? Or is this finally the year when Satan will give you eternal life and help you take over the world?
