  • We're starting to lose track of who stands where on the whole casino issue. Last we checked, Michael was pretty firmly against it. But this week, a Michael aide speaking to a group of pro-casino Fishtown residents (yes, apparently, contrary to what most of the local media would have you believe, there are pro-casino residents out there) said that Michael was moving cautiously forward on the project.
  • I have been suffering from an incredibly huge bout of writer's block lately. That means two things: another one of my fifteen ideas for television shows that "can write themselves" will have to remain unwritten and all of my fans at the Phillyist have been without reading material for too long. So since my wife and Mom steadfastly refuse to read the paper, I thought I just had to get something on the site. Who's ready for some hate!?!?

Sometimes, it's hard to resist the hate. You may not be having an especially bad day – you may in fact be in a good mood. But sometimes the snark comes so naturally that you have to marinate in it. Like it's Lawry's.

As everyone watched Haley Scarnato get her ass kicked off American Idol last night, we were at The Tower Theater watching Toby Lightman's kick-ass show. She was so good we forgot who she was opening for. Oh yeah, Taylor Hicks, the winner of American Idol's fifth season, and better known as The Soul Patrol. Toby Lightman, a native of Cherry Hill, NJ, rocked the house last night showcasing songs from her new album, Bird...

Long before we'd ever heard Lily Allen sing, Phillyist was completely in love with her. (We even posted about it on a "This Week in Celebrity" post back in October.) Between that and the fact that the media buzz around Lily Allen is continuing to grow, we clearly HAD to start listening to her music. And now that we have her debut CD, on iTunes, it's just about all that we listen to. Allen's music is insanely catchy: a blend of Britpop, reggae, and Hip-Hop with funny, clever lyrics: the combination instantly evoked The Streets for us We find ourselves singing her most explicit lyrics to ourself, but probably too loudly, on the way home from work. Allen isn't necessarily doing anything new, but she's definitely enjoying herself. And we're enjoying ourselves, too, because anyone who samples 50 Cent to write a song about her grandmother's shopping habits gets a gold star for humor in our book. She may just be our new girl-crush.

If the Phillies manage to hold on to this half game lead in the wild card race until the season runs out (pleasepleaseplease), the third inning of yesterday’s 10-7 win over the Florida Marlins will encompass the long strange trip this has been.

  • The race for a Democratic nomination to a PA state House seat is really going down to the wire. In fact, things are so close, it'll almost certainly take a court case to settle it. The main two contestants are a 25-year-old housing counselor named Tom Payton Jr. and a Philadelphia Parking Authority employee named Emilio Vazquez. Amazingly, Vazquez's strong showing comes in spite of the fact that he was left off of the ballot - all votes for him were write-ins. Of course, whoever wins doesn't exactly have smooth sailing ahead - he then has to defeat Republican Troy L. Bouie in the fall election.
