A whole slew of new listings now that the new year has begun. We couldn't fit them all here, so be sure you follow the jump to see what else is opening in the Greater Philadelphia region. Now, on with the listings!
The Sea and Cake is one of those rare bands that is totally consistent and reliable in terms of style and quality. For years they've been putting out ten track-long CDs full of excellent, mellow indie pop. Pop any one of their discs in the player and you are guaranteed a good time. Their latest album, Everybody, which came out in May, over four years since their last full-length release, is no exception. How can you resist the soothing voice of Sam Prekop? His and Archer Prewitt's driving guitars? John McEntire's monster beats, Erik Claridge's strong bass lines?
Congrats to Ryan of West Philly for winning our contest with his haiku on the theme "Sailing the Sea of Cheesesteaks."
PhillyGayCalendar and TLBTB present Gay Prom 2007 this Saturday. The theme this year is "Under The Sea," and it will take place at PURE nightclub. They're promising a great time; the description says, "Think your high school prom...only bigger, sexier, and this time, you don't have to sneak the booze in!" Pink drinks are $2, as are the Coors Lights, and there are $1 shots from 9-11 pm. Cheap booze is totally the way to get people to show up on time for an event. However, it also means that this is a 21+ evening.

The Sea: The Sea is a "rock opera" about a young man going to sea, and his subsequent life as a sailor. Like the rock operas that have preceeded it (e.g. Tommy & The Wall) The Sea is composed of individual songs telling individual stories, which work together to tell a larger tale, as opposed to the traditional opera form where the narrative is presented through sung dialog. In this case, the songs are presented as chapters to the story, each when named by the description of what is to happen therein.
