2007 was without a doubt a year of challenge for hip-hop. Reports of its demise were on the tip of just about everybody's tongue. Crunk had come and gone, Jay-Z was in retirement, those that came up in the mid-nineties hip-hop hey day rewinding big verses over and over didn't listen to the radio anymore. The dirty party rhymes of the past now nothing but misogynistic trash; yesterday's raw statements on American life in the ghetto became needlessly violent, potentially dangerous minstrel music. After being hailed as the American culture movement of a generation, the bling had lost its luster.

You know those songs that take over your headphones for weeks at a time? Well, the youngest alternative-rocker on the Phillyist staff decided to put all those infectious tunes into a list of 10 - and then 10 more, just because. We here at Phillyist love throwing a good party almost as much as we love running a contest. Having both at once makes us positively giddy!
The Phillyist sports department has been running into a bit of a problem lately. In our continuing quest to write sanely about Philadelphia sports as much as possible, we have been struggling to find photos that aren't copyrighted so we can use them here on the site. To be even more blunt about it, we don't want to get sued by anyone. So all those great photos out there on Flickr that are labeled "All Rights Reserved" are off-limits.
After an unusually mild winter, Phillyist has found that this second day of spring is, well, not very springtimey. But here's some -ist love to keep you warm!
Dear Readers:
From The Phillyist 'What We Would Have Posted Had We Existed A Few Years Ago' Files:
The Phillyist garden is a wonder this time of year. The tomatoes are starting to produce. There are a few string beans to be picked here and there. Scallions are plumping up. But the star of the garden? The herbs.
Tomorrow the hordes will descend on the Parkway to enjoy music and what will no doubt be an very close closeness with their fellow man, as Philadelphia hosts one of the 10 worldwide Live 8 concerts.
