The PA Guv is meeting up with New York Senator and 2008 Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton at City Hall. The Inquirer reports that the 1:15pm meeting was added to her schedule late last night.

  • The PA budget got held up a bit yesterday by some further discussion, especially about the Senate plan to fund hazardous-sites cleanup by taking $40 million from a land preservation fund. Lawmakers have made the wise decision to not decide on the most contentious bits until later, so the budget did indeed get through both Houses yesterday and will be signed by Rendell later today... hopefully, anyway.
  • Spring break strikes the city of Philadelphia this week. Not to worry, the failsafe Philadelphia Chamber Music Society and the Kimmel Center have a few tricks up their sleeves.

  • The wife of a University of Pennsylvania economics professor was beaten to death in her Main Line home last Friday, and evidence now suggests that what appeared to be a break-in may have been staged to look that way; it's possible she knew her killer.
  • The foot fetish guy has moved on to South Philly, but we've also got a description now: "thin, with a light to medium complexion, 5-feet-8 to 5-feet-10, with widely spaced, deep-set eyes and a light, salt-and-pepper beard." Call 215-685-3251 or -3265 if you've got any information on this creep.
  • This past week, older men were taking the law into their own hands against thieves - allegedly, of course. Example number 1: On Thursday morning, 23-year-old William Edney tried to carjack 78-year-old George Newton's SUV in West Philly. Newton gave him the keys, but noticed the young man was having trouble changing gears and holding his gun at the same time, and so pulled his own piece and shot the guy in the jaw. Edney started to drive off, but apparently not at high speeds, because Newton was able to follow and shoot him again. Newton said, "Both windows were down so I didn't mess up any of my glass." That is hardcore. Somehow, Edney was able to drive himself to the hospital and get treatment; he's in stable condition now - and being charged by the police.
  • Who amongst us hasn't stood outside the local beer distributor on a Sunday, wringing our hands with agony, clutching our money, trying to will the distributor to open? Just us? OK, we confess -- we'd probably just head on over to Monk's if the fever for a beer on a lazy Sunday afternoon overtook us. But for those of you not prone to social interaction on a Sunday, have we got news for you: there's a very good chance that you may soon be able to legally purchase beer on Sunday, minus the fleeing the state and smuggling it across state lines! Woo! The PA Senate approved the law change, and Governor Rendell is due to get to it shortly. If Governor Rendell does sign the law, it would mean a sweet five hour window on Sunday wherein we can all buy cases of beer from the distributor. Ben Franklin once said, "Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." While not all of us are religious, we can certainly get behind the sentiment. And hey, it'll make those Sunday picnics a lot more interesting.

Come Fourth of July weekend, we can count on Philly residents with more enthusiasm than brains to take to the streets, illegal fireworks in hand. And we mean that literally. It is not unusual to hear the loud boom of fireworks, followed by gut-wrenching screams, the smell of burning flesh, and then ambulance sirens. Ah, the sweet sound of Philadelphia summers! Some people never learn to leave it the experts. Or, at the very least, to let go and run away after the fuse is lit. The PA Department of Agriculture changed the fireworks regulations. Items that are not grounded or that explode have been illegal in Pennsylvania for quite some time, and continue to be illegal. This means anything much past sparklers are verboten. But new laws say that you can buy all the firecrackers, M-80's, and various other fireworks you want in Pennsylvania...as long as you promise, Scout's honor, not to light them here. Drive to Jersey and blow your hand off, OK? Philadephia is now relaxing its own fire code regulations concerning the use of fireworks, according to CBS 3 Investigative Reporter Walt Hunter: "Despite demonstrations stressing fireworks safety, two fire department memos obtained by CBS 3 show the city is relaxing regulations and allowing more types of sparklers to be sold at more locations than in the past." Drinking at family picnics and street parties, combined with more powerful fireworks -- perfect together! Be careful this weekend, kids -- if you need to make an emergency room run, we fear that you'll be waiting even longer than usual.
