The news has just broken that Philadelphia has been eliminated from contention to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. The three cities that did make the cut were Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Houston was the other city eliminated of the five that were under consideration by the United States Olympic Committee.

The Philadelphia Triathlon in Fairmount Park, now in its second year, is running from Friday, June 23rd to Sunday, June 25th. The Olympic Distance Race, which includes a 1.5 kilometer swimming portion, a 40 kilometer biking portion, and a 10 kilometer run (Phillyist is tired just from typing all that!) sold out in 14 days. So, you ask, if it's sold out and it's not until June anyway, why are you talking about it? Well, because they just added a Sprint Distance Race to the program for Saturday, June 24th and registration for it opened today, that's why. This event is not quite as strenuous as the Olympic race, and includes only a .9 kilometer swimming portion, a 24 kilometer biking portion, and a 5 kilometer run. Heh. Only. If you think you're up for it, you can register here. Phillyist thinks we'll stay at home and bask in the warm glow of our computer.
