Proofreading Philly

Proofreading Philly tries to capture typos, wordos, and all other kinds of grammatical mistakes that we see around the city. But we need your help! Email photos to us from your computer or your phone, and show the city that you care about good grammar.

  • Yesterday City Councilman Darrell Clarke moved to lift a little known, almost four-decades-old city law that bans men massaging women and women massaging men.
  • The Fumo trial is already getting a little nasty, with the defense essentially accusing the prosecution of racism in its jury selection. (We also enjoy the headline of that article, because we misread it as "Fumo-in-law.")
  • Democrats now outnumber Republicans in Pennsylvania by almost 1.2 million. Meanwhile, the Obama campaign has received threats at several of its Pennsylvania offices and is asking labor unions to help provide volunteer security at 27 of the offices between now and Election Day, including six in Philadelphia.
  • Editor Jim found this gem of a misspelling in [semi]-precious metal, and he writes:

So you're a fashion student, and you're taking a class about designing clothes for children. If there aren't a lot of Doogie Housers hanging around campus, you'll need to find some models elsewhere. The Drexel Fashion Department did just that, partnering with Charles R. Drew School, a UCity elementary school. An exhibit of the results, Project Imagine, opens Thursday night at Nexus, and runs through July 23rd.

This Phillyist lives a block and a half from the downtown Rita's (you know, the one that actually has indoor seating), and even though we don't go there very often, it saddened us to see them close up shop for the winter, complete with window sign reading "We'll miss you!" We would walk by every day, thinking of just how sad and lonely it looked in there. But yesterday, we were happy to see that the sign had been taken down, and a new one was in its place, telling all passers-by that Rita's would re-open Thursday (as in, tomorrow). We assume that the rest of the Rita's locations in the area will be opening tomorrow as well.
