With so many amazing concerts in such a short period of time, it's inevitable that you'll run into a few doozies. Unfortunately for me, that doozy was Sunday night at North Star Bar. Earlier in the summer, I saw the band MAE open for Ok Go and The Fray at the Tweeter Center. Their six-song set was fun and enjoyable, but not completely engaging. I faulted the venue, crowd, and the fact that MAE had...

On of our favorite shows this summer was the MAE/Ok Go/The Fray concert at the Tweeter Center. Imagine 25,000 screaming fans, perfect weather and awesome seats. It was incredible. Though we are a huge fan of intimate settings and up-and-coming bands, we enjoyed the huge crowd, music and overall feel of the outdoor concert. It really was the perfect way to start the summer. Now, we are fortunate to end our summer with an intimate,...

If you are a Grey's Anatomy fan, you know that part of the fun of the show is listening to the great indie music they use. Kate Havnevik, The Ditty Bops, The Fray and The Postal Service have all been featured on their soundtracks. That's some pretty awesome music. Season three was no exception. Ingrid Michaelson ended that season with the beautiful song "Corner of Your Heart." This was her fourth song featured on Grey's...

25,000 people packed into the Tweeter Center on Sunday night to see Mae, Ok Go and The Fray. Judging by how many people were there, I'm sure that some of you readers were there as well. I had a night that won't soon be forgotten. Treated like a royal, I was a escorted back to Mae's tour bus for an exclusive interview (look for it soon). I chatted, in the back of the tour...

Phillyist is pleased that San Francisco-based cartoonist and animator Levni Yilmaz has decided to go bi-coastal and share his weekly "Tales of Mere Existence" series with us. Already a hit at SFist, the comics find the "humor of self-destructive thinking, obsessiveness, and the way that we all create our own limitations and get in our own ways," which, we think, just about sums up the mindsets of most bloggers. Welcome to the fray, Lev!

Last year when Jamie Cullum came to town, Brandi Carlile opened for him. What a great surprise for all of us in the audience. Not only was she a great performer, but her music rocked as well. Now we get a chance to see Brandi Carlile headline her own tour at World Cafe Live. She has already sold out this performance and the several other cities on her North American tour. Brandi Carlile released...

We don't know about where you are, but it seems like spring can't decide whether or not to happen. Some days are warm, some days are cold, and sometimes you aren't sure which. Baseball may have started up (and soccer/football winding down) but it still seems cold out there. Unless it's not. Anyways, onto the -ists.

Our new author Lou is jumping right into the fray with a quick news post on the Penn shooting (gosh, we sure are Penn-centric!) that anonymous tipsters have been dumping links about into our contribute section - thanks for the heads-up, folks! We might give Lou more of a proper intro later, but for now we'll let his writing speak for him.

Phillyist is happy to welcome Erin Gautsche into the fray. Erin is currently the Program Coordinator at the Kelly Writers House, thus making her the former boss of Editor Jill. (Oh, how the tables have turned!) Erin joins the staff to cover local food, local beauty, and general local quirkiness, from a place of prestige on Miss Martha Graham Cracker's Top Eight.

It's a sad day at the New Bolton Center: Barbaro, the little horse that could, was euthanized at 10:30 this morning. He had undergone surgery on Saturday to attach an "external skeletal fixation device," designed to keep weight off the leg he hurt in the Preakness last year. Although those of us not in the know felt good about his chances after he pulled through initial surgery in May, Barbaro's recovery was far from over. Over the summer he developed laminitis in his left hind foot, leading to vets removing 80% of his hoof; for his chances to be considered good the hoof would have had to grow back, which it did not. Vets attached a cast, which led to an abscess, which led to the surgery Saturday. This morning everyone agreed it was best not to let the poor beast suffer anymore.

One of my dearest, darling manhunting partners emailed me this today:

We appear to have picked a rather disappointing week to unveil this new feature. Not much interesting here, except maybe The Fray (pictured above) with Brandi Carlile; that's kind of neat. Anyway, tickets are going on sale for the following events this week:

Of course, if that leads us to do our own research on candidates to wade through the bullshit, well...that's not such a bad thing.

Looks like Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter is the voice of sanity among Republicans when it comes to the Supreme Court and the replacement of the recently retired Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. And as chair of the Senate Judicial Committee, his words likely have some sway.
