Know how once in a while, you hear about some awesome free concert that happened in New York or LA and wonder why we don't ever get those things in Philly?
Pterodactyl, besides being one of our favorite dinosaurs, is also a pretty kick-ass noise rock trio out of Brooklyn. We've been listening to their self-titled release (which came out near the end of April), and although it's a bit uneven, its slight dips are compensated for by its soaring highs. By which we mean, it can occasionally drift so far into discordance that it's just annoying. But at other times it rocks your socks off. The insane, brutal drumming on "Polio" (one of the album's two really stand-out tracks, along with "Astros") is worth the price of admission alone.
(it's nice, pretty background music, but not nearly as fun as some of their earlier efforts), we're still totally psyched to check out their live show tonight. We've heard they put on a helluva show, and provided they at least play a few of the songs we remember from high school, we'll be perfectly happy.
Fans of straight-ahead, no-nonsense rock 'n roll from bands with talent to burn have had a rough go of it lately. Enter the Kings of Leon, who will bring their unique blend of indie and blues to the Electric Factory tonight. The show is way sold out, but you’re gonna wanna worm your way in, by hook or by crookaigslist.

Damn, The Decemberists just keep getting better. The Crane Wife, released earlier this month, may be their best album yet, perhaps even better than their previous masterpiece, Picaresque, or their fantastically rocking EP, The Tain. What puts it over the top is that now they're apparently doing prog rock. Or maybe they always were and we just hadn't noticed? Regardless, there's a 12 and a half minute, multi-part track called "The Island, Come And See, The Landlord's Daughter, You'll Not Feel The Drowning" on their new album that is unquestionably a progressive rock epic (it even has a keyboard solo!), and it is simply fantastic. And that's not to mention the nearly equally excellent three-part title track. Long live prog! Long live The Decemberists!
Were you really looking forward to shaking your booty at The Killers show tonight?
Local songsters MeWithoutYou released their second album, "Brother, Sister" late last month, and will be coming to town in their vegetable oil-powered bus tomorrow to play a show at the Electric Factory.

) or by attending one of their "Ticket Raids." There are four raids left this week (two of which are tonight) - so there's still a chance for you to get in on the free concert action. (See the WMMR website for details.)
Those with a taste for the obscure and the old-fashioned, as well as those with large vocabularies and a love of the sea, might want to climb aboard ye olde Electric Factory this Friday night at 8:30 when The Decemberists come to town as part of their "Flight of the Mistle Thrushes" (see what we mean?) Tour. The Decemberists are out behind their latest disc, the wonderfully whimsical, yet also dark and atmospheric, Picaresque. Their music - on Picaresque as on all their albums - has a distinctive sound that's hard to describe. But Phillyist can certainly try! Listening to The Decemberists is like entering a strange fantasy world, the late 19th century/early 20th century past of a parallel universe, populated by pining ghosts, exotic grand princesses, lovelorn spies, and vengeful seamen swallowed by whales. Each song tells its own weird little story, while also delivering jaunty indie rock stylings.
The Borgata has been packing them in lately. Along with the House of Blues, the Borgata is making a push for larger music crowds. The House of Blues has drawn in Eminem and the White Stripes, while the Borgata has booked Pearl Jam, the Roots, Tom Petty, Kelly Clarkson and Gwen Stefani. There's a definite movement towards pop and mainstream alternative music -- the venues are trying to not just appeal to their previous consumers, but a new crowd from the Philadelphia and New York areas.
