Phillyist Playlist: The Philadelphia Folk Festival

In case you haven't noticed, one of Phillyist's favorite things about the summer is all of the great festival concerts, and we've been loading up on them lately. Well, it's hard to believe, but it's now mid-August, so summer is nearing its end and the parade of festivals will pack it up until next May or so. But they're not done yet, and there's one long-standing end-of-summer festival to particularly look forward to: the Philadelphia Folk Festival, now in its 48th year.

Phillyist Playlist: The Decemberists at the Tower

Back in February, we encouraged you to pounce on tickets to see The Decemberists (MySpace) right when they went on sale. The show is now a couple days away, and if you didn't take our advice then, you're in luck, because there are still some tickets left for Saturday night's show.

The Decemberists. Wow. We all knew they would be good, but I wasn't expecting them to be that good. Last Sunday's concert was amazing (besides the humidity). They instantly jumped into this Phillyist's top-ten-best-concerts list. For the record, Phillyist has given The Decemberists nothing but positive reviews: "easily one of the best live shows we've ever seen," and another stated, "It was our first Decemberists show, and it won’t be our last." We agree...

Austinist gets arty with an interactive guide to SXSW, loved some local art galleries and a new art exhibit and lamented the possible loss of "Friday Night Lights" production to New Mexico.

I can't believe this year is over. It has come and gone in a haze of concerts, martinis, deadlines, endings, beginnings, highs and lows.

Unfortunately, after stumbling over to the EC, we couldn’t forgive the opening band in the same manner. Maybe it was the lead singer’s dress, or perhaps it was the kindergarten jams and cross-stage frolicking. But whatever it was, only the stoned could’ve appreciated Lavender Diamonds. The band was a buzzkill in raiment white.

Damn, The Decemberists just keep getting better. The Crane Wife, released earlier this month, may be their best album yet, perhaps even better than their previous masterpiece, Picaresque, or their fantastically rocking EP, The Tain. What puts it over the top is that now they're apparently doing prog rock. Or maybe they always were and we just hadn't noticed? Regardless, there's a 12 and a half minute, multi-part track called "The Island, Come And See, The Landlord's Daughter, You'll Not Feel The Drowning" on their new album that is unquestionably a progressive rock epic (it even has a keyboard solo!), and it is simply fantastic. And that's not to mention the nearly equally excellent three-part title track. Long live prog! Long live The Decemberists!

A tall, icy glass of our favorite internet junk, just for you.

Phillyist didn't expect that a band known for its large vocabulary and weird, old-fashioned indie/pop/rock story-songs about ghosts, suicidal lovers, and seamen would deliver a crazed metal-style theatrical performance that was easily one of the best live shows we've ever seen. But that's what happened Friday night at the Electric Factory when The Decemberists took the stage.

Those with a taste for the obscure and the old-fashioned, as well as those with large vocabularies and a love of the sea, might want to climb aboard ye olde Electric Factory this Friday night at 8:30 when The Decemberists come to town as part of their "Flight of the Mistle Thrushes" (see what we mean?) Tour. The Decemberists are out behind their latest disc, the wonderfully whimsical, yet also dark and atmospheric, Picaresque. Their music - on Picaresque as on all their albums - has a distinctive sound that's hard to describe. But Phillyist can certainly try! Listening to The Decemberists is like entering a strange fantasy world, the late 19th century/early 20th century past of a parallel universe, populated by pining ghosts, exotic grand princesses, lovelorn spies, and vengeful seamen swallowed by whales. Each song tells its own weird little story, while also delivering jaunty indie rock stylings.
