I can't believe this year is over. It has come and gone in a haze of concerts, martinis, deadlines, endings, beginnings, highs and lows.
Damn, The Decemberists just keep getting better. The Crane Wife, released earlier this month, may be their best album yet, perhaps even better than their previous masterpiece, Picaresque, or their fantastically rocking EP, The Tain. What puts it over the top is that now they're apparently doing prog rock. Or maybe they always were and we just hadn't noticed? Regardless, there's a 12 and a half minute, multi-part track called "The Island, Come And See, The Landlord's Daughter, You'll Not Feel The Drowning" on their new album that is unquestionably a progressive rock epic (it even has a keyboard solo!), and it is simply fantastic. And that's not to mention the nearly equally excellent three-part title track. Long live prog! Long live The Decemberists!
