  • Insiders say Barack Obama is the favorite to win the endorsement of the Philadelphia Building Trades Council, which would represent a striking break with Governor Rendell and Mayor Nutter, who are supporting Hillary Clinton. The trades council, which includes 37 locals of building and construction trade unions, was scheduled to meet this morning in Northeast Philadelphia to decide the issue.
  • A man was walking north on Broad Street near Somerset in North Philadelphia, just before 5PM, when someone ran up to him from behind and, he thought, punched him in the back. He looked back and saw the mysterious person slip away around a corner. Then he kept walking. Minutes later, a passer-by told him, "Dude, you got a knife in your back." He walked to a nearby firehouse and was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he remained as of yesterday in stable condition.
  • The union that represents faculty and coaches at the 14 state-owned universities in Pennsylvania has voted overwhelmingly to strike "if contract negotiations with the State System of Higher Education break down." Current contracts expire June 30, so the earliest strike date would be July 1. Here's hoping negotiations go well!
  • Hey, Sidney Poitier was in town Tuesday night to receive the Marian Anderson award at the Kimmel Center! The award "honors artists who are also humanitarians," and is named after a famous opera singer from South Philly.
