Parking

Belmont Plateau is the last section of our Fairmount Park mini-series. The Plateau (located at Belmont and Montgomery Avenues) is mentioned in the song "Summertime" by a certain Will Smith, which I will spare you the quote from, and Philadelphia Weekly ran an article on it a few months ago, wondering if it is still "the place" to be. The article cites litter and people's excessively carefree attitudes about drinking out of doors as two major reasons why the Plateau is losing its appeal for some.

Parking

It probably goes without saying that Fairmount Park is a huge park. So, over the next few weeks Parking will focus on one section or part of Fairmount each week. And even then, we still won't get through the entire park, just a tiny bit over on the western side.

Positano Coast, Take Me Away!

Ah, summer is nearly upon us. Time to spend our weekends trudging over the Walt, getting scowled at nastily by South Jerseyans who want nothing more than for us to "go the hell home, ya' damn Shoobie!" Time for us to bake ourselves down the shore and wearily drive home in the same traffic, the same scowling, only to work another week and do it all over again. Some weekend, right?

We much prefer days like this one.

Labor Day typically signifies the end of summer, but while the weather's still hot (high today in the 80s, and my iPhone tells me that Thursday could be as high as 93°!), I'm going to enjoy my summery drinks, goddammit. Bring on the margaritas. Why yes, I will have another mojito. And did you say sangria? Hot damn!

Labor Day is nearly upon us. While we love the extra day off work, what we don't love is the fact that we'll soon be hurtling toward cold temperatures, icy streets, and a severe shortage of our favorite produce varieties. So for those of us who want to cling to summer as long as we possibly can, City Food Tours of Philadelphia will be offering a “So Long to Summer” Food Tour on Sunday.

  • Pretty soon Mayor Nutter will have to negotiate new contracts with Philadelphia's four municipal unions; the Daily News suspects the ordeal will be the end of Nutter's honeymoon.
  • Well, it's one way to keep cool.

Need something to go with your pb&j lunch? This summer before you head out to Center City Sips for happy hour, don't forget to check out the Center City District's lunch time concert series. It runs every Wednesday at various Center City locations through August 27. Visit the Center City District website for a complete concert schedule.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, we'll be posting events that are going on sale during the current week. This Thursday post only collects the latest announcements, so definitely check the Tuesday post for any you may have missed.

Fun around town, for $10 or less:

What's new and/or interesting on TV this week.

A tall, icy glass of our favorite internet junk, just for you. LAist has more fun photos from the writers' strike, this time featuring fans and employees of Mutant Enemy Productions (Joss Whedon's production company), who all came together last Friday to support the strikers. Aw, look at Nicholas Brendon in his hat and glasses. And Summer Glau is so cute! Nintendo claims they are surprised by the Greenpeace report which we posted about earlier,...

Dear Philadelphia Winter: The fact that I've started putting on a scarf for my walk to work means you're right around the corner, and there's no stopping you. For a significant portion of my life, I considered you a necessary evil. After all, without you, there would be no Thanksgiving, no Christmannakkanzaa, no New Year, right? But about three years ago, I decided that was a ridiculous idea. After all, people in, say, San Diego...

If you were a cool girl, you had a crush on a New Kid. If you were a nerd girl, you had a crush on a graphic artist. Phillyist fell (who are we kidding, falls) into the latter category with a decidedly loud thud. So it is with the drooling affect of an oversexed pre-adolescent that we greet the news that Adrian Tomine, our very first comics crush, will be reading tonight at the Free...

There was very little else for Londonist to be concerned with when the threat of a Tube strike became a very unpleasant reality. The inconvenience was extreme: there aren't many alternatives to the Tube in London despite the best efforts of the Londonist team to get everyone from A to B. Brighter news came in the form of the first ever female Yeoman Warder, or Beefeater as the position is more commonly known, and several smiles as well as lots of cash were raised by some plucky urban ironing. London is apparently full of lies and whales: one of these things is true. We leave that up to you to figure out.

Summer's winding down—or at least that's what the weather has told us the last few days—but one of the big "festival" concerts is coming through town this weekend, so the summer can't quite be done yet. Linkin Park's Projekt Revolution tour hits the Tweeter Center this Saturday. In addition to headliners Linkin Park, the tour features My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, HIM, and a number of others. Plus, the Major League Baseball Road Show featuring batting cages and video game kiosks will be at the show, so if there are any bands you're not interested in seeing, you'll still have some fun stuff to do.

Last night, I saw what for me was the funniest movie of the year. And since I paid for it and this is not an official review, I am going to show it some love. If the impenetrable heat has you down, get over to the Ritz at the Bourse and see The Ten, pronto. Here are ten reasons to follow these instructions immediately.

There are songs that just capture you, and you can’t resist finishing. Whatever the preoccupations of the moment - whether it’s that insatiable ear searching for new music, or something you hear on the Internet on the way to something else – there are songs that are too engaging to allow for any interruption. This was precisely the case when we first heard the title track “23,” by Blonde Redhead. When trying to describe the...

Not that we don't love Old City (we do), but we figured this week, we should focus on some of the First Friday goings-on that aren't part of the typical First Friday scene. Here are a few places we might be checking out tonight – places where the crowds might even be smaller. (That means more wine for us!)

Join the Bucks County Choral Society for their open Summer Sing of Orff's 'Carmina Burana.'

The shapeless dough of the internet, formed into tasty pellets and baked to perfection, just for you.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, we'll be posting events that are going on sale during the current week. This Tuesday post only collects the early announcements, so definitely check back on Thursday for the latest ticket news.

Even though the Philly Orchestra is off to Colorado, there are still some great midweek concerts to attend.

What with Paris Hilton's release earlier this week and the upcoming celebration of American Independence (sorry, Londonist!), we've been thinking a lot about freedom. Freedom to vote, freedom to choose, and most importantly, freedom to blog. Here are a few things we're happy we've been free to blog about this week.

We secretly yearn for a few well-placed tattoos, but our status as a corporate drone prevents us. That, or we just don't have to stones to go through with it. So we love these clothes and shoes, which are emblazoned with tattoo-like art, offering the best of both worlds. A girl can never have too many pairs of Chucks, so we are thinking of adding this pair to our collection.

Summer is here. The humidity and heat were in full force at The First Unitarian Church Friday night. Though it was a relatively cool night, the body heat of hundreds of teenagers made up for that in the dark, dank basement of the Church. Everyone seemed to be sweating, even the people standing away from the crowd on the sides. Though there were several bands that played Friday night, The Graduate is who we went...

The Philly Orchestra is finally back in town. Hooray!

The Center City Opera Theater wraps up its run of the world premiere of Lieberman's . You can read the Inquirer's take on it here.
