There's nothing like sex and murder to take one's mind off the economy, and today's story is perhaps one of the better scandals we've reported on.

A Haunting Tale of Two Endings

The best of the internet, chopped into tiny bits and grilled for your enjoyment.

  • 29-year-old Anthony Derubeis of Upper Darby decided to barbecue some books on his grill yesterday morning. When firefighters arrived, he started throwing stuff at them, like plates and full water bottles. Then he went inside and refused to come out, and eventually ended up getting into a fight with police, who subdued him. "We feel the guy may have some mental-health issues that have to be dealt with," said the Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood Sr. No kidding!
  • SEPTA bus schedule changes start tomorrow with Regional Rail changes following on September 7th. It's all part of SEPTA's big increase in service.
  • Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey will hold six town hall meetings in July. Each public meeting will focus on particular neighborhoods, and residents will be asked about local problems and suggestions on making the areas safer.
  • The Attorney General's Office has accused Former State Rep. Frank LaGrotta of giving his relatives fake jobs in order to pay them thousands in taxpayer dollars. A cheval-de-frise (an iron-tipped log that's placed in a riverbed along with many others in order to gore the hulls of enemy warships) was recently found at the bottom of the Delaware River at the Sunoco Logistics pier in South Philadelphia. It's a relic from the mid-1770s, and...

Fun Fun Fun Fest 2007 Recap from Super!Alright! on Vimeo. Austinist attended a town hall meeting about proposed noise ordinances that could undermine the city's future as the Live Music Capital of the World, and lamented the possible loss of Texas's only feminist bookstore. Throughout the week, they interviewed a bunch of indie fashion designers and D-I-Y websites—Etsy, Ornamental Things, 31 Corn Lane, and Aorta Designs—for the upcoming Stitch Fashion Show. They also did...

This week's quote comes from Oscar Wilde, who wrote: "A little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal." Now, on with the listings!

It's rare that we get to talk about an indie rock show that features more than one band that we're familiar with and impressed by, but we're getting that chance today. Tonight at Johnny Brenda's both Film School (MySpace) and Eulogies will be playing, along with Cloud Minder and Minipop. Eulogies, on their self-titled release, plays a melancholy (but fun) alterna-pop that one might describe as emo - although we'd rather not, since emo has bad connotations, and we actually like Eulogies. (Download their track "One Man.") The vocals will remind you of J Mascis, and indeed the music has a vague Dinosaur Jr. flavor to it in general. Meanwhile, Film School, on their latest release, Hide Out, are putting out a fun, droning, new New Wave kind of indie pop, with a strong beat and a Yo La Tengo feel, and with brilliant track titles like "Sick Hipster Nursed by Suicide Girl" (a song that manages to be just as excellent as its title). (Download "Lectric," a kick-ass track off Hide Out.)

  • 63-year-old retired policeman "Osvaldo Torres walked into the emergency room at Albert Einstein Medical Center yesterday morning, sat for a few moments, then went to a nearby restrooom and shot himself to death." A suicide note was found at the scene, but its contents have not been made public.

This week ended with the launch of the seventh and final Harry Potter installation. But while the world was consumed with Pottermania, it's important to remember that there were more serious things going on in the world, too – two of them in -Ist cities.

  • Police are saying that 18-year-old Charles T. "Chuckie" Meyers was driving in South Philly on Saturday when he shot and killed a bicycle-riding 14-year-old boy when the boy wouldn't get out of his way fast enough. But friends and relatives of Meyers can't believe he would do such a thing.

I would like to begin this review by strongly urging all those who believe in abstinence-only sex ed classes to see . There has never been a better defense of Joycelyn Elders' opinions on sex education—even though it was written over a hundred years before President Clinton appointed her to the office of the Surgeon General.

Maybe Whiskey Dix has lost its charm (and maybe its license...again); maybe you just feel it’s time to get out during daylight hours. Maybe mom used to shield your eyes on the street and now you’re curious about the "freak shows" she wanted you to avoid. In any case, check out the Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention. The three-day affair isn’t just for inked up bouncers and other assorted burly dudes, either. Attendance often includes families and people just in it for the spectacle. You know, people watchers like yours truly.

    - Former Eagle Andre Waters has died - the victim of suicide.
    - Nate Wiley, saxophonist at Bob & Barbara's, has passed away following a recent stroke. (via)
    - Oliver Neal, picked up for drug possession, somehow managed to produce a gun and shoot himself in the back of the head while sitting, alone, in the back of a police vehicle.
    - A young man was shot three times in the back (by parties unknown) in the Wissanoming part of town.
And in slightly less depressing news...
    - Richard Powell's The Philadelphian - known to many of us only in its cinematic form, The Young Philadelphians (the book's been out of print for ages) - is being re-released in a 50th anniversary edition.
    - City Magazine has partnered with Capogiro to offer readers a chance to design and win their own custom pint of gelato. Seems like a chilly time of year to be conferring over frozen confections, but we're a sucker for the gelato at Capogiro, so we might give it a whirl. Image via Morguefile

Sometimes, we really have to wonder if there's any excuse for bad taste.

Thursday is certainly tempting and titillating this week, as not one, but two events feature the beast with two backs tonight:

...Seriously? Oh, that Michael! He's so crazy! (Thanks to Editor Jim, via MSNBC.)
