It's been a wretched, sticky summer as usual, but we've still managed to hit the pavement to see our overgrown baby mature. Within a month, the Comcast Center will have a completed glass exterior, but we'll still get to watch the development of the outdoor plaza along JFK Blvd, the atrium and entrance to Suburban Station, and best of all, the unveiling of the lighting scheme. (Don't confuse the construction lights seen so far for the final illumination.)

  • "Sherwood Forest" - which is actually "the concourse below 15th Street linking Suburban Station with tunnels to City Hall, the Municipal Services Building, and the Broad Street Subway" - is not always the most pleasant place to be. As the Inquirer puts it: "in August, when Philly's temperature and humidity soar, the pungent odor of urine-soaked concrete is unforgettable." That's why the Center City District, a privately funded organization created to improve cleanliness, safety and the quality of life downtown, has taken it upon itself to give the place a daily scrubbing from now on.
  • When I first saw that SEPTA was conducting a campaign to cut down cell phone conversation on their trains, I have to say I was skeptical. No amount of pandering, I thought, would stop passengers from making incredibly urgent calls to talk about the prior night’s debauchery or the conflict at work that only a complete narcissist could spend more than five seconds thinking about. But, alas, I have to say the signs with the juvenile clip art seem to be working. In the last couple of weeks, I’ve definitely heard less high-maintenance drama queens whining about why the demise of their one-month relationship is the end of the world. Makes me think that SEPTA might want to get the five-year-olds at their advertising agency started on some other ideas. Campaign slogans have been provided.

I have suddenly and rather unexpectedly found myself unemployed.

New in 2006, this light installation brightens the walk through the Suburban Station subway concourse.

Monday morning, I was walking down Chestnut, on my way to Suburban Station. About twenty feet ahead of me, a twenty-something-year-old woman, wearing a business suit and carrying a briefcase stopped short. She looked around like there was some foul smell following her. Then she lifted her right foot, checked her shoe, gasped and clutched her heart.

Phillyist loves sushi. So much, in fact, that we end up eating it at least twice a week. It's not great for our bank account. We just think of it as getting our fill now, because someday we're going to want kids and that will be nine months plus nursing time, times however many babies end up happening, that we'll be missing out on our sushi consumption.

And so, after lots of posts on the subject on Phillyist and a ridiculous amount of hype across the planet, the World Cup begins today. The first game kicks off today at noon Eastern, with hosts Germany taking on Costa Rica. Every match will be broadcast in high definition on ESPN, ESPN2 or ABC, with Spanish-language (but standard definition) telecasts of each game on Univision or Telefutura.

Things are not looking good for a quick resolution to the now three day old SEPTA strike.

How'd the first day of the SEPTA strike go? Well, it depends on who you talk to.

If NYC has an unsubstantiated terror threat against their subways, so must we all share in the paranoia, er, wealth. Due to police activity Market East regional train station is shut down, effectively also cutting off service at 30th Street Station and Suburban Station.

18th Street is closed between Arch and JFK at this hour (as well as Arch Street from 17th to 18th Streets), thanks to police activity in the area involving a suspicious package.
