Playlist Rewind: Andrew Bird at The Electric Factory

This post won't be the first to bemoan the acoustical nightmare that The Electric Factory can be. In fact, I hadn't returned there since seeing Tool over a decade ago mainly because mosh pits and tinny sound are no longer my thing. But the promise of an Andrew Bird show got me back to the Factory's sticky concrete floors and tinnitus producing sound. Fortunately, Bird survived the bee stings he endured during last week's interview with Phillyist, and as always, he didn't disappoint.

Phillyist Interviews... Andrew Bird

Andrew Bird (MySpace) may very well be one of the most interesting musicians around right now. His self-proclaimed description as a "Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist, lyricist and whistler" does not do justice to the layered, richly subtle musical spectacles he offers audiences night after night. He could add that bees love him, as a swarm decided to descend upon our interview. Bird lands in Philly again this weekend, and if you haven't seen him live, it is time to end that gap in your concert-viewing repertoire. Check out the show details below the interview.

Even though our weather is wacky, and even though it is supposed to be in the 60s next week, yesterday and this morning were harsh reminders that yes, in fact, it is winter and goddamn can it get cold. So it seems a good time to mention Greater Philadelphia Cares’ 12th Annual Coat drive, going on now through January 21. Simply take your new or gently used winter coat to one of the listed drop-off locations, or directly to the warehouse at St. Vincent DePaul. The folks at GPC will get the coats to the folks that need them the most in this (sometimes) harsh weather. The deadline is Martin Luther King Day, giving us just over two weeks to get those closets cleaned out.

Scout Niblett (that's her with the monkey) is a woman who sings and plays guitar, and we like her 3-song EP Dinosaur Egg, released back in May. The title track is about really hoping your dinosaur egg hatches and your robot slave springs to life in time for that party on Friday, so of course we love it. There's also a neat cover of The Cars' classic "Just What I Needed," and a slower, lengthier, but still very groovy track entitled "Just Do It." It's all fun stuff, so we're betting when Scout plays the North Star on Sunday, July 15, it'll be a good time, especially since Scout will be there supporting St. Vincent, which is the band of singer and multi-instrumentalist Annie Clark, who's played for such indie luminaries as The Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Steven.

Well-clad in red Mary Janes, red tights, black skirt, white shirt and ascot, St. Vincent took the stage to a background of swirling, strobe light stars, chirping birds and an empty, yellow birdcage. While it might sound like the setting to a B-rate high school musical, it was the platform for Annie Clark to purvey her brand of finger-picking, guitar rock.

Her resume includes opening for acts such as Television, Xiu Xiu, and most recently, on her previous jaunt to Philadelphia, indie up and comers Midlake. You may also recognize her as one of The Polyphonic Spree. Or, perhaps you caught her as part of Sufjan Stevens’s touring band.
