Editor's note: This review contains some comments and descriptions that could be considered "spoilers," but only if you're unfamiliar with the story of Sweeney Todd, which is unforgivable anyway, so we have little sympathy for you.

What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.

Let me just start off by saying that there is a lot of talent onstage during Being Alive. Let me follow that up by saying all the talent in the world can't save a bad show. It's not bad, I think, because Sondheim is some kind of holy, un-adaptable composer, whose music should never, never, ever be taken out of context, as some have suggested. In fact, more than a few revues have been built...

. (Complete lyrics here.) We've chosen it in honor of the new PTC show of the same name, set not only to open their 2007-2008 season, but also their brand new theatre. Now, on with the listings!

One of the most common, and legitimate, criticisms of the music of Stephen Sondheim by performers and critics alike is that he's not tuneful enough. "Hummable," I think is the word most often used by these critics.

Things will be quiet in these listings over the next few weeks, since Philadelphia’s theatre community will be all about the Fringe till mid-September. We’ll have extensive Fringe coverage here on Phillyist, but we didn’t want you to forget about the other shows going on, too. Now, on with the listings!

, "Comedy Tonight." The players are emphasizing that what you'll be seeing for the evening is a Roman comedy, rather than a Greek tragedy. The rhyming line that follows is, "She plays Medea later this week." But as the Arden's run of Sondheim's musical comedy is a month long, we're assuming that's not the case. We're sorry we're late this week, folks. There was just so much good theatre this week that we found ourselves a little overwhelmed, and we needed a moment to handle the excitement.
