Cafe Loftus Celebrates with Free Coffee

Even coffee lovers are tightening pursestrings, sacrificing their morning fixes of espresso drinks for supermarket blends. We have to admit, grabbing a cup on-the-go was always part of our morning routines, but since cutting back can save some of us over $15 a week, we’ve gotten used to home-brewed substitutes. There’s something to be missed, though, about standing in line half-conscious and having a barista know exactly what we want.

If you see a Zipcar that has a Starbucks cup on its roof, don't be an asshole; tell the driver about it. For being a good samaritan, you will receive a $5 Starbucks gift card from the Zipcar's driver. We've seen this over the past two days, but there's no telling how long (or short) it will last. Karma does exist and it does pay to be nice.

According to the Philadelphia Business Journal and our fellow tweeters, Starbucks is giving coffee away to votersall over the country! If you get a sticker confirming that you voted, bring it. But it appears that the honor system will be in effect for those of us (like Phillyist!) who were not given a sticker.

The best of the internet, squirted out in flavorful neon globules, just for you.

Fun around town, for $10 or less:

So, this Phillyist decided to make a quick trip to the Starbucks in Fairmount this morning. I ordered my grande Pike Place and tried the Stella Berry Bar (eh… I should have had a mini vanilla scone). The cashier gave me my receipt and informed me if I brought it back after 2PM I would get a grande iced coffee drink for only $2! That’s cool, I thought. A little incentive for repeat business later in the day is good business. Plus, I was flirting with her which proves the class is working!

The best of the internet, chopped into tiny bits and grilled for your enjoyment.

Starbucks announced earlier this month that they will be closing 600 locations between now and the first half of the 2009 fiscal year, sending millions of caffeine addicts into panic. Fortunately for the local addicts, at least, no Pennsylvania Starbucks closures have yet been announced. The Starbucks kiosk in the Cherry Hill Mall, however, is less fortunate.

Jocelyn Kirsch, aka Bonnie, aka Stealy McFakeBirthdayBoobies turned herself in to the US Marshall’s Office a little before 2 PM today.

  • SFist cheered twice this week: first, after a Superior Court judge halted a light brown apple moth aerial pesticide spraying; and second, after receiving reader mail regarding blatant multiple chemical sensitivity prejudice.

  • Michael Nutter wants to make college possible for more Philadelphians. As it stands, only 18% of Philadelphia residents have college degrees. A better educated community means a better economy, so he intends to adjust the budget to benefit the Community College of Philadelphia in an effort to achieve a higher percentage of educated citizens. This is all wonderful.

What's new and/or interesting on TV this week.

If you are an elitist coffee nerd like us, you get Starbucks e-mail. Today we received a missive that totally got our caffeine-infused juices flowing.

  • The latest on the PA primary race: Barack Obama spoke in Allentown yesterday, criticizing Republican nominee John McCain on foreign and energy policy, and disagreeing with those who are complaining that the fight for the Democratic nomination is going on too long. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton returned to Pennsylvania yesterday, talking about the economy and concerns of middle-class voters at an afternoon roundtable outside Harrisburg and an evening rally in Bucks County. Finally, Pennsylvanians signed up to vote in the primary in record numbers. On the last day to register (March 24th), about 33,300 first-time voters signed up as Democrats and another 46,000 Pennsylvanians switched to the blue party. In the same period, 6,000 new voters registered as Republicans and 1,800 switched in.
  • Dear Philadelphia:

  • A federal appeals court decision yesterday threw out Mumia Abu-Jamal's death sentence for killing Daniel Faulkner and ruled that Abu-Jamal must be sentenced to life in prison or get a chance with a new Philadelphia jury that would decide only whether he should get life or be sentenced to death again.
  • For the first time in more than a decade, SEPTA has a monetary surplus due to a ridership increase, so yesterday the company unveiled a $1.08 billion operating-budget proposal for next fiscal year that actually includes service increases instead of cuts.
  • OK, take a deep breath. Are you sitting down? Good. People, all the Starbucks in the country are going to be shut down for three hours on February 26th. Which, if our calculations are correct, means most of the stores in America will be closed. But don't freak out! It'll only be from 5:30PM to 8:30PM, which is well after most of us have already gotten our Starbucks fix. Also, they're only shutting the doors so they can retrain the barristas and implement new standards that will supposedly provide a better experience for customers. Translation: sales have been lagging, and Starbucks needs to find a way to stimulate growth (that's hot) and its brand. Good luck, guys! Regardless, you better be open bright and early the next morning, or the country will collapse.

A tall, icy glass of our favorite internet junk, just for you.

When this Phillyist gets Starbucks, he's one of those guys with the forty-seven part order. You know the ones: Grande non-fat extra hot caramel no foam extra shot latte on the rocks with a twist little bit of oil hold the mayo. There's much to be said about Starbucks, both good and bad. One of the good things that can be said, and it's the thing that leads to those comically long orders, is that Starbucks is one of the only places where you can get exactly what you want.

Local student Dan Magro wears many hats. He is (as mentioned) a student, at the University of the Arts. He is a Starbucks employee in Southampton. He is a writer/filmmaker. And tonight, he will add to that hat-list "philanthropist." Magro's movie, Portraits of Sari, premieres tonight at Gershman Hall (corner of Broad and Pine), but you'll be getting more than just a movie with your attendance. It turns out that the lead actor in Portraits,...

A little while back, we told you about the First Person Story Tour and its colorful "mascot," the Story Tour Van. The Story Tour was a promotion to build up some buzz for the First Person Festival. Well, it's that time. The festival kicks off today with a wide range of events. The events are priced from free to $35 (the two most expensive events include food as part of the ticket price), and there's a bit of something for everyone. The Festival takes place entirely at 2111 Sansom Street, home of the Philadelphia Shakespeare Festival, so no matter which event you're going to, you'll know where to be, and you won't have to scramble from one location to another when you're going to multiple events.

With the frosty mornings this week, there's no doubt fall has arrived, and with it thoughts of the impending winter holidays... and chilly commutes. The folks at Starbucks will be easing the transition to both tomorrow morning in celebration of the return of their red cup; greeters will regale commuters at 30th Street with oodles of goodies from 7-10AM. There will be samples of appropriate winter drinks, including Christmas Blend, Peppermint Mocha, and Hot Chocolate....
