Having grown up Catholic, this Phillyist's early experience with bingo (besides the dog song, of course) consisted of the school gym being converted every other Wednesday afternoon into a downmarket The Price Is Right (if The Price Is Right had legions of older folk sitting at long folding tables littered with markers, enough bingo cards to paper said tables, and ashtrays. And if Bob Barker was a priest). It was not really appealing so much as darkly fascinating, but still none of us sat around dreaming of the day when we'd have markers of our own.
It's Sunday, and you're feeling the need for a little culture in your life. (Don't deny it, we know you are.) But you're not really feeling up to shelling out for theatre tickets, and the art museum is just so full on weekends!
It's a week of season enders, that's for sure. Get in the last bit of the regular season while you can!
What are you doing this afternoon? Working, you say? Why would you want to go and do a thing like that when you could take off early and go catch a reading of Roy Smiles' cast members Scott Greer, Scott Barrow, and Ross Manson." Anything that has to do with Peter Sellers sounds absolutely great to us, so you'd best believe that the reading appeals to the Phillyist staff.
This Phillyist lives a block and a half from the downtown Rita's (you know, the one that actually has indoor seating), and even though we don't go there very often, it saddened us to see them close up shop for the winter, complete with window sign reading "We'll miss you!" We would walk by every day, thinking of just how sad and lonely it looked in there. But yesterday, we were happy to see that the sign had been taken down, and a new one was in its place, telling all passers-by that Rita's would re-open Thursday (as in, tomorrow). We assume that the rest of the Rita's locations in the area will be opening tomorrow as well.
Spring break strikes the city of Philadelphia this week. Not to worry, the failsafe Philadelphia Chamber Music Society and the Kimmel Center have a few tricks up their sleeves.
, only with more sexy, shirtless, dancing gays (okay, and a few straights too—maybe).
will take place in Irvine Auditorium at 8PM. All proceeds will benefit Women Organized Against Rape, Philadelphia’s only rape crisis center.
WQHS (Penn’s student radio station), is currently a steaming-only station. As part of an effort to help the station grow, there will be a show TONIGHT at the Pilam House (3914 Spruce Street). It will feature local bands Golden Ball, Creeping Weeds, Brown Recluse Sings, and Arc In Round.
I have a crush… on a song. This is actually a common occurrence in my life. I love music. I have music playing at all times. I cannot be in my apartment without it on. I can’t drive without music (or be driven somewhere without it). Even when I hate the CD we have to listen to at work, I want it on. This need, coupled with my innate neuroses, means that I often find songs I just can’t stop listening to.
Once in a while, some major assault on English Grammar as we know it offends our editorial sensibilities so deeply that we don't know how to channel our frustration.
I went to Penn. I knew people—male and female—who were "brothers" at Pilam. My freshman year, I even went to a few shows there. During Spring Fling, I danced (completely sober!) with my friends (probably less sober) on the window seat in the front room at the house, and a drunk passerby dove through the window, grabbed me by the legs, and said: "You're beautiful."
We hope you have your Santa hats on. Christmas has come to town, in the form of a barrage of Christmas concerts, replete with Handel’s Messiah sing alongs throughout the tri-state region. Check the Inquirer’s listings for a sing along near you!
Choral season is upon us! With both Choral Arts Society and Singing City opening on the same night, it's a tough call. You'll just have to read the descriptions and decide for yourself.
We totally dug this video, but we think it should be more like "97 Things to Explore in Philly," or "97 Things to Love about Philly." Because we know the Melrose is a local landmark deserving of our respect, etc. etc., but how many tourists do you know who visit it? Ditto King of Jeans, Spruce Street Video, and Philly's seemingly endless supply of sidewalk furniture.
Fun around town, for $10 or less:
To the twelve year olds who flashed plastic switchblades at us near the Penn Alexander School:
Starting this friday, it's Arts and Culture Week in Center City Philadelphia. This means 1/2 price tickets to a variety of Center City venues from the 21st through the 30th. If you've been looking to check out some of our Philly's swankier cultural offerings, now's the time.
This week, we're highlighting an activity beyond our city borders. But as it's (a) easily accessible by PATCO and (b) for a good cause, we'll brook no complaints.
Art Spiegelman, author and artist behind the ground-breaking, best-selling, Pulitzer Prize winning graphic novel , will be speaking about the history of comics and their changing role in society and popular culture. (And, we hope, explaining why he insists on spelling the word "comics" as "comix." Phillyist is a fan of Speigelman and has great respect for him as a storyteller and innovator - but we're not altogether sure that his Pulitzer gives him the right to change the spellings of words willy-nilly.) The program starts at 8PM, and costs $8 ($5 for students).
