No More Phillies, So Now What?

The 2008 Phillies were a surprising and welcome departure from the Philly sports norm. Let's face it: We've gotten used to coming up short—whether short or barely short. Not long after the Phillies paraded down Broad Street last Halloween, the Eagles returned the cosmos to their rightful balance. (Villanova's Final Four appearance was an unexpected bonus that threatened to upset the recently-restored natural order of things. Fortunately for the universe, North Carolina did not allow the end of days to come about.)

Sure, we have a bad rap for throwing snowballs at Santa, but do we deserve this title bestowed on us by The Daily Show with Jon Stewart? Phillyist wants to hear what you think!

You may have caught this on our Twitter feed over the weekend, but after homering twice last night, we thought this love letter to Chase Utley was especially deserved.

Remember way back when the Phillies were playing the Dodgers and we pointed out in the morning news roundup that MLB.com blew it and published a link to a story which had the Dodgers beating the Phillies 4-3 to tie the series at two games apiece? Well, the Inquirer ran a three-quarters page Macy's ad on the back page of the A section which says "CONGRATULATIONS PHILLIES! Back-to-Back Champs."

  • Fortunately, Philly got some measure of victory over New York yesterday, as the Eagles trounced the New Jersey York Giants, 40-17.

Mayors Nutter and Bloomberg are using the World Series (have we mentioned the Phillies are playing the Yankees?) as an opportunity to draw attention to community service. Unlike a cheesecake/cheesesteak bet, this friendly wager will have the losing mayor (whom we can only assume will be Bloomberg) visiting the winning mayor's city to work on a mural on a children's recreational center. Phillyist looks forward to Mayor Bloomberg's visit after the series.

Top 5 Reasons Why We Hate the Yankees

Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you're well aware the World Series is scheduled to start today. We're sort of skeptical this rain is ever going to stop, but while we're all waiting for that to happen check out our run-down of why the Yankees suck (and some reasons why the Phillies are better) below:

Love him or hate him (we love him), Bill Simmons is one of the most popular, if not the most popular, sports columnists on the Internets. Simmons has penned a new book, The Book of Basketball: The NBA According to the Sports Guy, to be released tomorrow. You can get the book via Amazon for less than 20 bones (or clams or whatever you call them). The book weighs in at right around 700 pages, but don't let that dissuade you from buying it, as Simmons himself said in an interview with the Huffington Post: "If you like my columns, you're going to enjoy the book. At the very least, it's a book that you can stick next to your toilet, read 5 pages at a time and finish five months from now. It will be the best five months of dumping you've ever had. Your colon is going to love this book."

Good idea: celebrating the home team.

We don't even need to say more. All aboard!!!

We have utmost confidence in our boys, but we could use a little less "one more game" talk. Our fists are bleeding from knocking wood.

  • And speaking of last night's game, check out this "Dewey Defeats Truman"-esque headline that was posted on MLB.com before last night's game was even over. FAIL. (Via Preston & Steve.)

  • We suspect that the Eagles got the memo that the Raiders would be an easy win. They just didn't read the part that said they'd still have to show up and actually play some football to get it.
  • Here we are in October. Fall is in full swing. The temperature is falling. We're entering "Project Bundle Up" territory where every attractive girl wears enough clothing to overheat an Inuit.

    No Unlikely Heroes

The Phillies advanced to the NLCS Tuesday night in true Philly fashion: by making the whole town cower in fear, waiting until the last minute, then pulling ahead by a margin so minuscule it could have easily been wiped out in the bottom of the 9th. Tonight our Fightin's square off against the Dodgers at 8:07 p.m for Game One of the series. If the last few games serve as any indication, you might want to keep a barf bag nearby. (Note to the Phillies: It's not exciting when the wins come down to the wire, it's just nerve-wracking. Stop doing that and get big leads early instead. Then keep them. Please and thank you.)

  • In other happy sports news, the Eagles announced a $500,000 grant program to assist local animal welfare organizations. Among the recipients of grant money will be our friends at PAWS, who will receive money to support the construction of a low-cost spay and neuter facility in the city.
  • After two stupid early games, a snow-out, and a late, late game, Phillies fans can rejoice in a game we'll actually get to watch. Tonight's 6:07 p.m. start time still doesn't make a whole lot of sense (what's with the :07, anyway?), but it's a hell of a lot better than last night, anxiously trying to keep our eyes open at 2 a.m., watching to make sure Brad Lidge didn't blow the perilous 1-run lead the Phils gained in the top of the 9th after a hard-fought game.
