Girls Rock Philly, the organization, is gearing up for Girls Rock Philly, a week-long alternative music camp for girls aged 10-18. This is the first time Philadelphia will host such a camp (we're slightly behind Chicago, New York, Portland, and Murfreesboro, TN), and they need your help to make this debut really, well, rocking.

Do you like comics? How about comics that are free? Well, this Phillyist does, which is why each year I look forward to Free Comic Book Day - the day when comic book stores across the planet give out select titles to patrons for free. Mind you - you shouldn't expect to be handed a free copy of Detective Comics #33 - but you can expect a series of sampler books, as well as the occasional odd title you wouldn't have picked-up otherwise. And, personally, I feel any excuse to get to the comic book store is a good one.
Phillyist will be attending ChefAid 2006, now in its 13th year, this Sunday at the Ritz Carlton.The annual black-tie event features the talents of more then 15 generous local Chefs from regional restaurants who donate their time and effort for the cocktail hour and five course meal to benefit MANNAParticipating Chefs and restaurants this year include Kiong Banhm, Twenty Manning; Thien Ngo, Fork; Jim Coleman, Coleman Restaurant; Joseph Poon; and Justin Rambo-Garwood from Philadelphia Fish & Company. Moore Brothers Wine Company and Southern Wine and Spirits of Pennsylvania are among the many beverage sponsors. Founded in 1990, MANNA provides hot, home delivered meals and nutritional counseling throughout the tri-state area to men women and children living with HIV/AIDS.
Among other Philadelphians leaving the area for a week of barbecue and indie rock will be Plain Parade's Maria Tessa Sciarrino. Not only will Maria be appearing on a panel at the SXSW Music Conference, but she'll also be blogging for Toyota as they try to promote their new Yaris model.
