The weather's gotten colder, but First Friday still has some goodies that should get you out of your homes, apartments, and cardboard boxes. So put on your fall jacket, nip a little wine or whiskey to keep warm, and get out to First Friday for some great events.
Performance: Litttle Girl Blue (Pheralyn Dove a.k.a. "Lady Dove") (No future performances)
The Rotunda on 40th and Walnut is known for its support of the Philadelphia hip-hop community. It is the home to "The Gathering," a monthly jam session featuring open ciphers, live painters, break crews, and guest djs. It also hosts many local hip-hop acts though out the year. This past Friday, I attended the Art of War Lyricist competition a contest pitting polished spoken word artists against quick-lipped freestyling MCs. It is a interesting concept, as the line between a poet and an MC has always been fuzzy. Well, on Friday the answer was clear.

So says Post Midnight, host of Late Night Series: Philadelphia, as he speeds down the Jersey turnpike on his way to University City. Every Thursday Night he makes the 30 minute trek (“at least the way I drive”) to the Creese Center on Drexel’s campus. There he MCs between an eclectic mix of musicians, poets and comedians. It is not an enviable task. While many open mics tend to have their own niche, the wide open love bubble that is LNS draws performances of all energies. There is a lot to juggle.
Wow! First Friday again? Guess that's what happens when you've got a month that's only twenty-eight days long. Unfortunately, Phillyist is going to have to miss this month (our duties in the world of theatre criticism call), but here are a couple of First Friday events we'd be hitting up if we weren't going to be in a darkened room twenty blocks away.
Spoken word is usually not for us. Quality artists are few and far between, with most seeming to be about performing, rather than the words themselves. The artists add weight to dull selections through tone and inflection, but left alone on the page, their words become tepid.

If Wolfmother is the triumphant, vibrant rebirth of '70s heavy metal (and they certainly are, may the Gods of metal bless 'em; by all means pick up their new self-titled full-length, which is fantastic), then The Clientele are the triumphant, vibrant rebirth of '60s Brit-pop, served with a large side of thoughtful sadness to make it bittersweet. And happily, they're invading Philly tonight (the First Unitarian Church, to be exact) along with Great Lakes and Shai Halperin from the Capitol Years (check the R5 Productions site for song samples and more details on the show).

Several months ago, Phillyist made our way down the stairs of Medusa's Lounge (27 South 21st Street) in order to see Perseus' Gorgon terror, Medusa, sing and other crooner favorites. We admit we enjoyed her song-stylings, but she absolutely charmed our hard-little, classics-lovin' hearts when she distributed reflective glasses to the audience to protect us from her troublesome hairdo.
