Asshole of the Week

I have a sort of Medicare attitude toward robbery. A lot of people I know have been held up for their wallets or had things lifted out of their apartments. For some, it was like an almost friendly business transaction--one fellow asked if he could get his driver's license back so he wouldn't have to stand in line at the DMV, and the thief acquiesced because nobody should have to suffer that hell. For others, it was simply terrifying.

  • Police were investigating two homicides and at least two shootings in the city over the weekend.
  • On November 4th, voters will be asked to abolish the Fairmount Park Commission and merge it with the city Recreation Department, placing the whole under the mayor as a standard city department. The Inquirer looks at some of the arguments for and against.

  • Oprah Winfrey was scheduled to make a pitch for tougher dog laws in Pennsylvania on her talk show yesterday, but ran out of time. The pitch was to include her reading excerpts from a letter Gov. Rendell sent her last month seeking support for legislation he's pushing to overhaul Pennsylvania's dog law to prevent abuses in puppy mills. Oprah tentatively plans to address the issue later this month.

  • A man was walking north on Broad Street near Somerset in North Philadelphia, just before 5PM, when someone ran up to him from behind and, he thought, punched him in the back. He looked back and saw the mysterious person slip away around a corner. Then he kept walking. Minutes later, a passer-by told him, "Dude, you got a knife in your back." He walked to a nearby firehouse and was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he remained as of yesterday in stable condition.
  • Two West Philadelphia High students were slashed during an argument on Monday, so a heavy police presence blanketed the area yesterday as students were dismissed for the day.
  • At least one of those New Year's arrests that we posted about yesterday was a complete disaster. Not only was it police gunfire that injured a 9-year-old boy at the scene, the cops arrested the wrong man and let the right man go free. They did eventually get the real culprit Tuesday night.
  • A 4-year-old in Southwest Philadelphia shot himself once in the throat about 4:50PM yesterday inside a rowhouse belonging to his family. He was pronounced dead forty minutes later at Children's Hospital. The weapon was a 9mm handgun, and there doesn't seem to be any information yet on how the child got his hands on it, or who it belongs to.
  • If you still aren't bored of stories about Jocelyn S. Kirsch and Edward K. Anderton, then by all means, read on. Meanwhile, other rather more dangerous criminals are still on the loose. Police still have little to go on in the brutal November 25th murder of John Bartram High School sophomore Antonio Q. Clarke, who was last seen alive trying to catch a trolley in Southwest Philadelphia. Call police at 215-686-3334 or -3335 with...

The public and the media watched as officials held a roll call of 80 uniformed police at 60th Street and Woodland Avenue yesterday afternoon.

  • If you can't wait to see the result of the legal proceedings against Senator Vince Fumo... well, get used to disappointment, because the trial isn't likely to start until early 2008, and it'll probably go on three to four months.
  • An off-duty Southwest Philadelphia police officer allegedly tried to do some shop-lifting at a Northeast Philly Wal-Mart Tuesday night - and he wasn't kidding around either. Supposedly he tried to sneak out with $258 worth of unpaid for products. He was caught and arrested inside the store. We, of course, are desperately curious about what exactly he (allegedly, of course) tried to steal...
  • We're just going to quote the first line from this article: "A ninth-grade male student at Olney High School was arrested yesterday for allegedly setting a female classmate's hair on fire." Apparently the suspect and victim were among a group that were talking and joking just moments before the incident occurred. Luckily a teacher and other students put the flames out quickly, and the girl wasn't burned anywhere else on her body. Maybe he was just trying to help light her cigarette?
  • Twitch has the inside track on the lineup of films for the 2006 Philadelphia Film Festival's Danger After Dark series, traditionally Phillyist's favorite program at the festival. They got it in an email from the programmer himself, Mr. Travis Crawford. Sigh. We remember when Travis used to send us the line-up ahead of time. What happened this year, Travis? Were we bad? Anyway, as usual the schedule is littered with East Coast and North American premiers, and all kinds of crazy-sounding foreign films we can't wait to see. You can follow the link for the full list, but two of the highlights are The Descent (acclaimed British horror film "about young women fighting monsters in a cave" from the maker of Dog Soldiers) and Lady Vengeance (the final entry in Park Chan-wook's vengeance trilogy; you could have caught the first two entries at the film festival in previous years). Phillyist can't wait. (Via)
