Every weekday of December (except for December 25, that is), Phillyist will be counting down to 2009 with our highlights from the past year and our predictions for the next. If you have a list you'd like to submit, let us know!

  • David C. Sicoli, a Philadelphia priest with "a long history of abusive and manipulative relationships with adolescents," according to a grand jury report, has finally been defrocked by the Roman Catholic Church. No criminal charges were ever lodged against him. Numerous complaints were filed about his alleged misconduct with boys, however, and other priests warned about him, but the church continued to simply transfer him to different parishes, and even ended up naming him associate director of the CCD youth program for the entire Philadelphia area.
  • So just what is it that makes Thai food special? Most likely it is the combination in each dish of the four basic flavors -- sweet, sour, salty and spicy. Over the centuries, Thai cooking has borrowed freely from the culinary arts of China, India and Malaysia, blending these different influences to create something that is truly unique. Is it First Friday again already? We had so much fun at the last one that we're not sure what time we finally got home. We do remember drinking plenty of wine and eating plenty of cheese. We even remember making some impulse purchases. Oh, and fawning over an artist that we've always admired, thereby probably frightening her a good deal. This month, we're going to try schmoozing first, drinking later, and see how that works out for us. Spots you might find us:

A ferocious head cold is slowly attacking everyone I know, and this Wednesday evening, I accepted that I, too, am sick. And then I accepted that I wanted soup and I wanted it now. On my way home from a rehearsal, I stopped by Szechuan Hunan Chinese Restaurant to pick up as much Wonton Soup as I could carry.

  • Philadelphia's homicide count hit 358 Wednesday night, with the deadly shooting of a 19-year old on the 5300 block of Hazelhurt Street.

  • Bank robbers in the Frankford area of the city apparently left some "money and clothes" at the scene of their crime. The money they got away with was without dyepacks, so police are hoping their leave-behinds will be their undoing.

  • Andy Warhol may have made Campbell Soup art, but Campbell Soup heiress, Dorrance H. Hamilton has done one better - she's contributing to the future of art by giving $25 million to the University of the Arts via her charitable trust.
