See that thing? Over there to the left? That’s a Seawolf. The fish. It’s not Sea Wolf (myspace). The band. Oddly, it is the only one with a Wikipedia page. Perhaps the Seawolf has more adoring fans than Sea Wolf? Judging from the crowd at the Trocadero on Monday night, though, I beg to differ. The Troc was approximately two-thirds to three-fourths full by the time Sea Wolf finished plucking their various strings (and consistently half-full the entire show).
Lucky for you, rockers, Sea Wolf is making a stop in the Illadelph-I-A. Don’t confuse this Sea Wolf with the Jack London novel. Believe me. The call of the wild (Pun alert! Pun alert!) Sea Wolf will be pouring out of the Trocadero on Monday evening. Alex Church, the multi-instrumentalist solely responsible for Sea Wolf, is going to bang your head like a gong and satiate your need for some silver sun (the Pickup variety).

Last night, as threatened, this Phillyist was there to witness the first show of Wolfmother's American tour, which went down right here in Philadelphia, PA at the historic and legendary Electric Factory. Opening for Wolfmother were two bands: Silversun Pickups and Dead Meadow. I arrived perhaps a few minutes after the 8 o'clock start time and was stunned to see that the first of those bands, Silversun Pickups, had already taken the stage. A prompt rock show?! Unheard of! Luckily, I don't think I missed any of the Pickups' set, which was fantastic. They were the one band who'd seemed a bit out of place on this bill, as on their recent full-length Carnavas, which I've been enjoying, they sound softer and more indie pop-oriented than Wolfmother and Dead Meadow. But whether it was the company they were keeping, or whether it was just the effect of playing live, they were way more metal last night than in their recorded performances, with guitarist/lead singer Brian Aubert head-banging, crawling on the floor, thrashing away on his guitar, and screaming the lyrics into the mic. Bassist Nikki Monniger seemed amused by his antics, and took a slightly calmer approach to her strong and steady playing. But the whole band was tight and sounded great, churning out rocking performances of their songs that were even better than the versions recorded on the album.
Man, are we going to an awesome show tonight. Wolfmother's in town, people. They're playing the Electric Factory with like-sounding "retro-rock" act Dead Meadow and indie pop rock outfit Silversun Pickups. We're putting "retro-rock" in quotes because these bands aren't just retreads; they're starting with some old sounds, yes, but they're making them fresh and new.
No, this isn’t a Halloween post, though it could be. Viva Voce will be playing at Johnny Brenda’s on Friday the 13th (cue sinister music here) with Silversun Pickups and Like a Fox.
