Asshole of the Week

Dear Philadelphia Regional Area:

  • Police are seeking a rapist who assaulted a woman in a party bus parked at Lincoln Financial Field during Sunday's Eagles game.
  • 43-year-old Tarriq Ali, sentenced to a life term in Delaware, was being transported from California back to Delaware by a private prisoner transportation service when he escaped at Philadelphia International Airport. He is still at large.
  • Meteorologists warn that Tropical Storm Hanna could hit the Philadelphia region with high winds and pounding rain tomorrow night and Saturday.
  • 29-year-old Anthony Derubeis of Upper Darby decided to barbecue some books on his grill yesterday morning. When firefighters arrived, he started throwing stuff at them, like plates and full water bottles. Then he went inside and refused to come out, and eventually ended up getting into a fight with police, who subdued him. "We feel the guy may have some mental-health issues that have to be dealt with," said the Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood Sr. No kidding!
  • SEPTA bus schedule changes start tomorrow with Regional Rail changes following on September 7th. It's all part of SEPTA's big increase in service.
  • The nationwide Million Father March—which consists of fathers taking their children to school, participating in home and school events, and signing a pledge of nonviolence—kicks off locally this Sunday night.
  • A Philadelphia police officer was responding to a call to assist another officer around 1AM this morning when his police car collided with another car at a downtown intersection. The officer is listed in critical condition, but his prognosis is good.
  • The Daily News describes a climate of fear and anger in Frankford, with residents on the lookout for a serial rapist. "Anticrime activists passed out flyers in the neighborhood yesterday while police—in a massive manhunt—took the unusual move of releasing the name and picture of a man wanted for questioning." Keep in mind Dorrell Shaw, 26, has not been charged, and is only wanted for questioning. Click through to take a look at the police sketch.
  • Police are still searching for the rapist or rapists who have been terrorizing the Frankford section of Philadelphia. A man was arrested Saturday in a kidnapping and sex assault, but police don't believe he's connected to the other incidents.
  • A federal appeals court decision yesterday threw out Mumia Abu-Jamal's death sentence for killing Daniel Faulkner and ruled that Abu-Jamal must be sentenced to life in prison or get a chance with a new Philadelphia jury that would decide only whether he should get life or be sentenced to death again.
  • Remember how Rick's Steaks was fighting to stay in the Reading Terminal Market? Well, the fight continues. A recent court ruling dismissed most of Olivieri's claims against Reading Terminal, but Olivieri's lawyer says they're still confident things will go Rick's way at the trial this summer.
  • The nearby city of Hazleton recently passed an ordinance that was meant to crack down on illegal aliens by penalizing businesses that hired them and landlords who rented to them, but yesterday a federal judge threw it out, saying it "was preempted by federal law and violated the plaintiffs' due-process rights." The mayor has already promised to appeal. The ultimate decision could have wide-ranging effect, as 100 other municipalities have since passed similar ordinances that have yet to go into effect, pending the Hazleton ruling.
  • One step forward, two steps back, right? Sounds like by the end of today, Philadelphia may no longer be a pro-choice city.
  • Commonwealth Court upheld Philly's much discussed limits on campaign contributions on Monday, but Chaka Fattah said he would appeal the ruling, which would bring the issue to the state Supreme Court.
  • If you can't wait to see the result of the legal proceedings against Senator Vince Fumo... well, get used to disappointment, because the trial isn't likely to start until early 2008, and it'll probably go on three to four months.
  • Another horrible crime that is made shocking by the ages of those involved is one that occurred on Thursday in Frankford, when a 12-year-old boy was found sexually assaulting his neighbor, a 7-year-old girl. Because he's over ten, he's being charged, among other things, with rape, sexual assault, indecent assault, aggravated assault, unlawful restraint, and false imprisonment.
  • Phillyist staffers tend to speak loudly. After all, we blog, so we obviously want to be heard. We've been close to shouting, though, since Overheard in Philly launched. After all, we've never passed on an opportunity for shameless self-promotion.
