When I heard that Star Foster had passed away, I didn't believe it. Part of me still doesn't. And it's not just because she was so young and it happened so suddenly, although she was and it did. It's mostly because she was so vibrant. I've never met anyone as fiercely alive as Star. All of her friends were always amazed at the sheer number of things she was doing at any one time. Besides writing for, and editing, Phillyist (of which she was one of the founding members), she also wrote for a women's technology blog called Shiny Shiny, for her own personal blog called Sarcasmo's Corner (where she plotted world domination and warned of the coming robot-ocalypse), for her Livejournal, for a horror movie blog called Monsters at Play, for a writing blog called Bitter Quill, and for all I know for about twenty other blogs, both local and international. When she wasn't writing for a blog, she was tinkering with a novel or some random piece of short fiction. And when she wasn't writing at all, she was going to see a movie, reading a gothic novel, playing a pirate on a haunted ship, going out dancing at Sex Dwarf, going out dancing at Dracula's Ball, or starring in an indie horror film. And somehow she still found time to hang out with all her friends, and to worry that perhaps her life was too boring and uneventful.

Free Chicago: Not the city - the band. They're giving a free performance at the Willow Grove Naval Base at 7PM. Directions and more info here.

Phillyist knows there are all kinds of controversy brewing about the movie version of will be speaking about the film at the Central Library (1901 Vine Street) at 7PM on Thursday night. FREE!

Sure, the new movie is coming out on Friday - but for you hardcore fans who can't wait for your wizard fix - Harry Potter themeband, Harry and the Potters will be at The Rotunda (4014 Walnut Street) Wednesday night at 6PM. For a suggested donation of $5, see brothers Paul (Harry, year 7) and Joe (Harry, year 4) DeGeorge perform such songs as "Wizard Chess," "Save Ginny Weasley" and "The Wrath of Hermione."

Starting this friday, it's Arts and Culture Week in Center City Philadelphia. This means 1/2 price tickets to a variety of Center City venues from the 21st through the 30th. If you've been looking to check out some of our Philly's swankier cultural offerings, now's the time.

Art Spiegelman, author and artist behind the ground-breaking, best-selling, Pulitzer Prize winning graphic novel , will be speaking about the history of comics and their changing role in society and popular culture. (And, we hope, explaining why he insists on spelling the word "comics" as "comix." Phillyist is a fan of Speigelman and has great respect for him as a storyteller and innovator - but we're not altogether sure that his Pulitzer gives him the right to change the spellings of words willy-nilly.) The program starts at 8PM, and costs $8 ($5 for students).

Featured Picks of the Week:

It's no secret that Phillyist loves Sex Dwarf - DJs Robert Drake and Pussy Galore's monthly 80's dance party at Fluid. But tonight's event is extra special; not only can you go and get your dorky dance on (we're sorry, although 80's music is Awesome, it's impossible to look cool when you dance to it), but in celebration of Sex Dwarf's second year, dancers and wallflowers alike can enjoy $1 PBRs, a free buffet from Lastest Dish until 10PM, "Sex Cake," (no, we have no idea either) and a New Wave makeover in the 'Nu Wave Boutique.' Phillyist is especially psyched about the last bit, and we're hoping to spend the evening sporting something "Hungry-Like-The-Wolf"-esque.

Sometimes it's good to give in to guilty pleasures -- even ones that invariably lead to us making happy fools out of ourselves in a public forum. With this in mind, Phillyist couldn't resist the opportunity to shake-our-money-maker 80s style at Fluid's monthly 80s dance party, Sex Dwarf. Fluid is a bit tricky to find (it's cleverly disguised as an unmarked door down an dark alley), but the imposing bouncer outside with the "Fluid" t-shirt convinced us that, despite the lack of signage and safe lighting, we were in the right place. The inside of Fluid is fairly non-descript as well; giving the overall feel that someone waited until their parents were out of town, decorated their basement with a few disco balls, and threw a party. Only with a much better bar. This atmosphere works to Sex Dwarf's advantage. Instead of feeling like the usual bump-and-grind meat market, Sex Dwarf feels like a party full of people you know: folks are friendly; the crowd amenable; and the dancing spontaneous, wild, and erratic (or maybe that was just us). How could we not fall instantly in love with a crowd of late twenty and thirty-somethings singing "We're the Kids of America," without irony and at the top of their voices, while simultaneously trying to figure out how they were going to get up in time for their business meeting the next morning? DJs Robert Drake and Pussy Galore present Sex Dwarf at Fluid (613 S. 4th Street) on the last Tuesday of every month. The show starts at 10 pm -- and admission is free until 11 (then $5 thereafter) -- but don't bother getting there too early, as the dancing doesn't start in earnest until about 11:30 pm.
