What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend. Becoming Jane - English majors around the world are either cringing or jumping for joy over this historical drama about the personal life of Jane Austen, which heavily influenced her work. Normally, this Phillyist would be rolling his eyes and thinking of any and every excuse imaginable to avoid seeing this movie, but if push comes to shove, he might suffer through it. After all, Anne......

In college, we knew this girl. Every time she hooked up, we found her in her room the next morning, dancing to "Angel of the Silences" from Recovering the Satellites. She said there was just something about that song. We'll probably run into her this weekend, at the Counting Crows show at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington. There's no doubt we'll ask if that's still her victory song. The Counting Crows will be touring to......

ABC 6 seems to have had way too much self love over its Thanksgiving Day Parade. Wednesday night at 11 PM they dedicated a large chunk of the first part of the newscast to the parade. Especially ridiculous was a poorly produced Dann Cuellar piece where he spent several minutes previewing the parade and “visited” the “North Pole” with some of the most awful green screen work you will ever see. If you are......

Let's look back at a week in which no site in the -ist network adopted anyone from Africa... -Austinist reveled in the dumb antics of some U.T. law students and posted some great audio from former New Orleans natives who've decided to stay in Austin. But the best news for Austinist? They were voted Best Local Entertainment Web Site by the local Austin alt-weekly. Congrats, Austinist. -DCist gloried in being told their musical tastes made......

Phillyist got an email from a friend letting us know that there's a new, regular storytelling event in town: The Circle Storytelling Series. The concept? People get together at a local watering hole and swap stories. (Kind of like people used to do in the Days of Yore, before blogs.) Nifty. Heck, if we were the type confident enough to tell a story without a keyboard and monitor between ourselves and our audience, we might......

The shapeless dough of the internet, formed into tasty pellets and baked to perfection, just for you. Saturday Night Live helpfully shows us what life would be like if Al Gore had become President. That's funny stuff. But it also makes us kind of wistful and sad. (Via) Already mastered Klingon and looking for a new geeky linguistic challenge? Well, check out this comprehensive guide to all of J. R. R. Tolkien's invented languages. It's......

Saturday Night, Phillyist crawled out of our relatively cool, dark apartment and faced the August weather in order to check out Smog at the North Star. Despite North Star's suggestion that audience members "get to shows in time to catch the openers," the first opening act didn't make it to the stage until 10PM. Phillyist can't complain too loudly, however, as getting there on time enabled us to claim a coveted sofa seat in the......
