What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.

Let's see if we can keep this straight. John Nolan left Taking Back Sunday to form Straylight Run (MySpace), for which he eventually recruited drummer Will Noon after the band Noon was in, Breaking Pangea, split up. The lead singer of Breaking Pangea had been Coatesville native Fred Mascherino, who then went on to replace Nolan in Taking Back Sunday. While still in Breaking Pangea, Mascherino began work on his own project, The Color Fred...

Let's get this out of the way up front. The video accompanying in this review was not selected for its quality, but because it pretty much embodies what happened at the Wachovia Center last Tuesday night. People went absolutely nutso for Fall Out Boy, to the point where this fan could only concentrate on Patrick Stump while he was doing backing vocals on Gym Class Heroes' performance of "Clothes Off." Seriously, it was pandemonium. We...

  • The Philadelphia Student Union is holding a rally tomorrow at 440 N. Broad at 4PM. "The specific aim is to proactively impact the way the school district deals with troubled schools, known as Corrective Action II Schools. More broadly however, PSU is pushing for educational equity across the state and school district."
  • The still theoretical Philadelphia Major League Soccer franchise already has a fan club: the Sons of Ben, or SoBs.

  • The Daily News has a run-down of some of the crime that occurred in the city this past weekend, and it includes a story about a potential burglar getting his head caught in a trapdoor and suffocating to death while trying to rob a bar. In other crime news, a man followed up a bungled attempt to rob the PNC Bank on 19th near Chestnut last Thursday morning with a more successful robbery of the TD Banknorth on Chestnut near 5th some 75 minutes later.
  • We would be terrible, awful, no good Phillies Phans (see what we did there?) if we didn't take the opportunity to congratulate Chase Utley, Cole Hamels and Aaron Rowand on their selection to the 2007 All-Star Game. We'll be honest - we were expecting that Utley would be elected starting second baseman, and we were fairly certain King Cole would make the cut on the mound. We were, however, pleasantly surprised to see Rowand make the team as a reserve. We've enjoyed watching Rowand's brand of gritty play since he was on the White Sox, and are particularly pleased that the rest of baseball appears to be taking notice.

  • That fire we mentioned yesterday that destroyed four rowhouses in West Philly was started by an arsonist when he/she took clothing and other items belonging to people who were recently evicted from one of the homes and set them on fire on the porch. No arrests have been made as of this writing.

Future Screenings: No future screenings scheduled

This morning, the first thing we thought to ourselves upon waking up was, “Fucker’s twat.”

A tall, icy glass of our favorite internet junk, just for you.

Philadelphia is one of the key stops on Galactic’s East Coast Run tour. The New Orleanian instrumental quintet--composed of Robert Mercurio on bass, Stanton Moore on drums, Jeff Raines on guitar, Rich Vogel on Hammond B3 organ and keyboards, and Ben Ellman on saxophone--will bring in its jazz/funk-infused music to the TLA on Thursday night. The band is one of the key acts from the recently announced New Orleans Jazz Fest line-up. So consider Thursday night a preview.

Before I begin my review of to make sure to visit the restroom on their way into the theater. The film clocks in at just under 150 minutes, without previews. Now that that's out of the way...

Normally we wouldn't be particularly interested in a kids' cartoon movie about a sheltered pet rat getting flushed down the toilet only to land in the middle of a whole city of rats, and a dangerous adventure he never could have imagined. But this movie was made by Aardman Animations, and we love Aardman Animations. These are the guys responsible for the classic stop-motion, clay-animated "Wallace & Gromit" shorts, as well as Chicken Run, and the recent Wallace & Gromit movie. They have a wonderful visual style and sense of humor, and even though Flushed Away is done using computer animation instead of the classic clay, both their style and humor come through effortlessly intact. Sometimes the characters even seem to be made of some magical, digital clay.

  • The Daily News discusses the pros and cons of the city's plan to fit out Philly with surveillance cameras. The folks quoted here from either side have pretty poor arguments to back up their positions; the ACLU spokesperson says even if the cameras make us safer, we might lose the "joys of anonymity" and have to live in a "less pleasant" society. Um, so what? Meanwhile, DA Lynne Abraham says (and we're paraphrasing slightly here), "There are already cameras everywhere else, so why not? C'mon, everybody else is doing it!" Which is, of course, a terrible argument for doing anything. Really the most compelling argument for the cameras is the evidence from similar programs in other cities, and from a trial run in our own, that they really do help to keep criminals off the streets and decrease violence. And we could certainly use a decrease in violence in the city right now.
  • Phillyist reader J. Zecker (YouTube user BlakeWallington) sent us this fun video he made last summer at the PMA. The Rocky Run sure looks different when Dali's face is on the steps!

If you've been reading anything by this Phillyist editor, you know that she's been in the process of moving over the last few weeks. While in between apartments, Phillyist HQ has been temporarily located at the apartment of a friend.
