The first time we heard the name A Fine Frenzy, the stage name of Alison Sudol, we quite honestly saw covering her as a way to see the Rufus Wainwright/Neko Case show at the Mann over the summer. What we didn't expect was for her to be, positively, the best act of the night. Alison and her gorgeous piano-driven pop have gotten quite popular since August: her song "You Picked Me," the complicated 5/8-time love song on her debut album, , has been an iTunes featured download, and she's all over VH1 these days, joining the growing cadre of talented female singer-songwriters that has sprung up in the last nine months or so.

Yesterday, Phillyist gave you a taste of the Philadelphia Live Arts and Philly Fringe Festivals. There's lots more to say about the Live Arts and Fringe, as they offer some of the most exciting arts events that you’ll see in Philly all year. The festivals are chock full of outrageous and insightful performances and happenings – even if you generally eschew live theatre, dance, and music, we guarantee you’ll find something you’ll love.

Hello, Philadelphia! Did you enjoy your Live 8? (I didn’t – but I’m a wimp when it comes to a 1 million + mob. See the Phillyist Live 8 questionnaire about that.) Did you enjoy your fuzzy moppet Bruce Vilanch, Wayne Brady, Patti La Belle, Rufus Wainwright’s lisp, and 20 minutes of “Rocket Man” from Elton for the 4th of July Sunoco Philadelphia Freedom Concert? (I did. Particularly when Patti dressed down the amateur dancer for not “treating her like a woman”.) Did you enjoy being referred to as a collective city by umpteen celebrities? (I didn’t. But then again, I doubt Will Smith could have belted out, “Hello, Jessica Haralson!” without arousing suspicion from a certain Mrs. Pinkett on the sidelines.) Did you learn anything new about AIDS? No? You didn’t?
