Yesterday afternoon in LOVE Park, two homeless women got into a fight over a homeless man's affections which ended in one woman stabbing the other to death. Perhaps not surprisingly, Mayor Nutter's recent press conference in which he angrily criticized DHS left some workers upset. He spent yesterday trying to placate them in a series of closed-door meetings. "A veteran Philadelphia-area Roman Catholic priest's transfer from Florida to Bucks County has been halted after......

The high-speed car chase and wreck on Roosevelt Boulevard that led to the death of a 17-year-old boy appears to have come out of a dispute over a 14-month-old baby—a baby who died early yesterday morning from injuries sustained in the crash. Philadelphia photographer, founder of phillyskyline.com, and friend of Phillyist Brad Maule has sued The Colbert Report, and the Philadelphia Daily News and Inquirer for using his photographs without permission. He is seeking......

A rear-end collision took place around 1AM this morning on southbound Roosevelt Boulevard near Adams Avenue. It tied up traffic for hours, killed a 17-year-old male, and critically injured at least two people, including an infant and a man. The crash apparently followed an argument and a chase, and is being investigated as a homicide. The Inquirer discusses the Dalai Lama's one-day visit to Philadelphia today. A City Planning Commission hearing was held yesterday on......

Around 2AM yesterday, Joseph Kelly Sr. was driving along the Vine Street Expressway when he saw a homeless man in a wheelchair marooned on the median. He pulled over and crossed three lanes on foot to try to help the man across the street. As one car slowed down to let them pass, another struck that vehicle and then ran into Kelly and the other man, killing them both. A 17-year-old male knocked on the......

The latest in the case of Ebony Nicole Dorsey, the 14-year-old girl allegedly killed by her mother's boyfriend: the Daily News has an exclusive interview with the girl's mother, Danielle Cattie, who calls her boyfriend a monster. Meanwhile, the Inquirer quotes Cattie's brother defending his sister; he says she's "a great mom who deeply loves her children," and "She's a good person who made some bad decisions. She's paid a horrible price." It may seem......

Irina Malinovskaya, a former University of Pennsylvania student, has already been on trial twice for the murder of the new girlfriend of her ex-boyfriend, but yesterday her third trial started because neither previous jury was able to come to a decision. A federal appeals court yesterday overturned a lower court's ruling and decided that Philadelphia police officers have immunity in the shooting of Jill Burella. Burella was shot by her husband, who then killed himself.......

Yesterday American Idol competitions were held at the Wachovia Center, and the Daily News was there. Update: We are informed that the Inquirer was there, too, and even shot some video. From Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon, technical problems made it impossible for anyone to buy Amtrak tickets either online or at station kiosks. The reservation system has since been completely restored. Apparently Philadelphia is losing some of its college graduates and young professionals to......

Digital video billboards are coming to the area. They display images or ad messages that change every eight seconds, and can also be used to display important information about traffic issues or security alerts. Some important area school news! First of all Penn State ranked number 5 on Princeton Review's annual list of the Top 20 Party Schools in the nation. Meanwhile, Bryn Mawr College ranked number 19 on the opposing list of the Top......

PA State Rep. Mark Cohen of Philadelphia has apparently been engaged in one of those most hated activities: billing taxpayers for frivolous expenses. He's been spent state money on an enormous numbers of books, and three society weekends in New York. The state Agriculture Department's restaurant inspection website, which used to just tell you whether each restaurant had passed inspection or not, now also provides complete inspection reports on all eateries. Check it out......

A new report says Pennsylvania does a bad job at helping people through the last stages of their lives, and suggests some possible improvements to end-of-life care in our state. Bees across the nation, including in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, have been dying at alarming rates and no one knows why - although possibilities include a virus, a fungal pathogen, or new pesticides that could be affecting the insects' ability to find their way home.......

Our own Senator Specter has reminded the President of something important: Congress is also involved in the decision-making! Those cameras they put in on Roosevelt Boulevard have really made a difference: 96% fewer cars are running red lights now. Gun violence in Pennsylvania "is killing black people at a higher rate than anywhere else in America." And that's just based on the 2004 data. So how do we beat the violence? The mayoral candidates want......

How about a couple of heartwarming holiday stories, huh? The Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Red Cross is throwing its eighth annual Children's Holiday Party at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel tonight. About 500 children who have lost their homes in various disasters will get to have fun and act like kids, and their parents will get to relax and enjoy it. Also, recently the students from Central Bucks West High School organized their Washington Project......

- Accidents on Roosevelt Boulevard have been a long-time problem - and it seems that previously installed red light cameras may have exacerbated, rather than aided, the problem. Currently, there is discussion to add radar enforcement to the speed deterrents. City Councilman Brian O'Neil has said, "The mayor should just shut down the middle six lanes until there is a solid plan in place -- or forget the middle lanes are there and green......

The zoo is getting rid of its elephants, and now the Academy of Natural Sciences is selling its minerals and gems - although admittedly, just a bunch that haven't been cleaned or displayed in decades. Ironically, the announcement came Sunday, the same time that the annual convention of geologists was visiting the city. Hey, Dr. J might buy the Sixers! Or, to be more accurate, he's the leader of a group of folks who are......

We've got a couple of guys for you to be on the lookout for. First up is a 20-year-old man, 5'5" and 125 pounds with a small goatee. His name is Kevin L. Johnson, and cops say he's been going around North Philly at night, high on angel dust, robbing people and sometimes shooting them. Call police at 215-686-3047 if you have any information. The other guy you have to look out for is......

We like to go and cruise that Information Superhighway from time to time. And when we're not doing that, we like to get sucked into the big black hole that is the Philadelphia Blogosphere. Here's the good, the bad and the Eskin for Friday, September 9th. >>> Remembering Dave Roberts: Even though Channel 6's Dave Roberts isn't dead (in fact, um, he's still on the air), the kind folks at Philadelphia's LiveJournal community are "fondly"......
