  • A 17-year-old male knocked on the door of the security booth inside the lobby of the Queen Lane Apartments late Sunday. When the cop inside opened it, the young man fired one shot with an assault rifle, striking the officer in the left hip underneath his bullet-proof vest. Luckily the officer was able to immediately slam shut the door of the bullet-proof booth before the gunman fired twice more. The youth then ran off and Zahir Boddy-Johnson was arrested an hour later for the crime, and will be charged as an adult with attempted murder, aggravated assault, robbery, firearms violations and related offenses. The officer is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
  • The latest in the case of Ebony Nicole Dorsey, the 14-year-old girl allegedly killed by her mother's boyfriend: the Daily News has an exclusive interview with the girl's mother, Danielle Cattie, who calls her boyfriend a monster. Meanwhile, the Inquirer quotes Cattie's brother defending his sister; he says she's "a great mom who deeply loves her children," and "She's a good person who made some bad decisions. She's paid a horrible price." It may seem...

  • A federal appeals court yesterday overturned a lower court's ruling and decided that Philadelphia police officers have immunity in the shooting of Jill Burella. Burella was shot by her husband, who then killed himself. She filed a suit back in 2000 claiming that "the Police Department knew her husband had a history of violence and mental problems but consistently failed to take action to protect her."

  • Bees across the nation, including in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, have been dying at alarming rates and no one knows why - although possibilities include a virus, a fungal pathogen, or new pesticides that could be affecting the insects' ability to find their way home. PA's apple harvest (the fourth-largest in the nation) and NJ's cranberries and blueberries, along with many other crops elsewhere, could begin to suffer if the bees continue to die off.
  • Those cameras they put in on Roosevelt Boulevard have really made a difference: 96% fewer cars are running red lights now.
  • Meanwhile, times are tough and sales are down for cart and kiosk merchants in area malls.
  • - Accidents on Roosevelt Boulevard have been a long-time problem - and it seems that previously installed red light cameras may have exacerbated, rather than aided, the problem. Currently, there is discussion to add radar enforcement to the speed deterrents. City Councilman Brian O'Neil has said, "The mayor should just shut down the middle six lanes until there is a solid plan in place -- or forget the middle lanes are there and green them over." Phillyist used to live in the Northeast - and whereas we think the entire neighborhood would be lost without Route 1 to rely on, greening over those middle lanes might not be a bad plan.

    - Bad news for Philly schools - the School District is planning some deep cuts in order to help assuage their $73-million + deficit. Thankfully for the students, the proposed cuts seem to fall on the administrative, rather than the educational, ends. (Children, after all, are our future - if Ms. Houston is to be believed.)
    - There's a movement to impeach the prez, and right here in our own town; specifically, at Independence Hall on the 11th. More info here. (via, which gets props for creative headlining)
    - Not exactly news, but as I know several people who were curious to hear what noted columnist and Santorum detractor Dan Savage might have to say about the outgoing Senator's defeat: here it is. (via) Image via Stock.xchng
